I was hoping someone might have unlocked their bootloader recently and might be able to tell me which of the two options is the proper procedure.

There are now 2 different versions of the bootloader unlock code, AFAIK it should depend of which OS version you had. See this post : Bootloader Unlocking Code for Fairphone 3 not working - #8 by _tmp
