Notes screen icons - how to delete?

I created some local files with the Notes app and icons for them appeared on the home screen. I later deleted those files but the icons are still there. When I long-press such an icon I see a minus pop up but when I touch that I see a message that the file has already been deleted. How can I delete the icon? I have tried looking for a pop-up menu or dragging the file to the top of the screen but these methods seem to be mythical even though they are often quoted.

I am replying to myself since nobody else has done so! I have these useless, annoying, phantom star-shaped icons on my screen that I cannot get rid of. Can someone put me out of my misery, please ……

Did you try to move them to the right upper corner. Not left, not in the middle.

Many thanks for the reply!

I have now tried what you said, and every other part of the screen too, but the best I have achieved is to move these phantoms off the home page to the next page.

I would love to be able to eliminate them once and for all!

Just a very wild guess. No guarantee of success.
I assume that with the Notes app you mean the app Keep Notes.
If you use another Notes app, replace the name Keep Notes with the name of the Notes app you use.

First delete the cache of the app Keep Notes. To do that:
Go to the Settings app.
Go to Apps
Go to Keep Notes
Go to Storage and cache
Tap on Clear cache.

Secondly update Google Play. To do that:
Go to the Settings app.
Go to Security and privacy.
Go to System and updates.
Tap Google Play system update.
You may need to run an update there.
Your phone will reboot when it is ready.

Success

I have another wild guess: maybe it’s not tied to the cache/data of the Google Keep Notes app but to the home screen app?
In that case it might help to delete the cache of the Quickstep app.
If that doesn’t help, you could also delete the data of Quickstep. Which of course would mean you’d then have to set up all app icons, background image or other customizations to the home screen again.
