Not possible to use eSIM in Germany

Hi everyone,

just wanted to use an eSIM on my new Fairphone 5 with eOS Murena on it, but the QR-Code from my new provider doesn’t work with my new phone. The provider said it’s because I’m not using a german branded smartphone - they said, by the QR-code it wants, it’s an american one(?!).
The question is: what can I do to get this fixed since I ordered the phone directly from Fairphone to Germany?

Hi @fault1er,

sorry to hear you experience issues using Esim,

sounds bit strange to me, i think is should work normaal.

here is some information about E sim’s on Fairphone:

maybe som helpful information on this article:

Please add your provider and why they state such, based on what info? I assume this could be caused by the e/OS System in some way. Maybe ask this in the e/OS forum.

It’s congstar and they said that my phone expects other informations in the QR-code and that suggests that the phone is an US-one. You can type in the qr-code by hand but what my provider gives me isn’t accepted by the phone. Is it possible, that the eOS-rom that was used by Fairphone is an US-one?

Edit: my phone expects a code beginning with 1$ or LPA:1$, but the code from my provider looks way different.

I read the articles but they offer no solution for my issue.

I suggest to contact FP support (will take a lot time, i.e. weeks to get a response, can be speed up by using the online chat currently thursdays and fridays in the morning) and def check the e/OS forum if anyone had this before and ask for help there.

Edit just checked and my FP5 with FPOS also states the same regarding 1$. I dont remember how it was when I added my travel eSIM.
And its the same on the FP4. Actually I doubt this has anything to do with US. I use a German eSIM in my FP4.
So what happens when you scan the QR code?

Okay, thats strange. It just doesnt scan it. So I looked what code the phone expects.
I used the qr-code from congstar on an iPad and it worked just like expected.
Sadly I have no clue whats wrong with the FP5. I’ve tried it with two different FP5 with eOS.

So it looks like an issue with eOS and not the Fairphone itself.

What does that mean? It doesnt focus to scan?

When I hover the camera over the qr code nothing happens. I’m talking about the qr-scan function within the “add esim”-menu.

Just giving some perspektive…

We have a FP5 with eOS using an eSIM (O2, I think) bought directly from Fairphone (however installed eOS by ourselves)

And we have a FP4 using an eSIM (Congstar) bought directly from Fairphone (however installed eOS by ourselves)

None of them gave any trouble like this setting up those eSIMs as far as I recall.

Both show the 1$ labels when trying to add a new eSIM by entering the code manually.

However I don’t now whether they were setup via QR code or manual code. But it might have been the latter, indeed (i.e. the more I think about it the more it might have ben that scanning really was not working in some cases).

You should definitely file an issue with Fairphone even though it might be that not much will come out of that. Also asking the eOS community whether others have experienced similar issues might help.

Maybe in the meantime you could ask your provider to send you an old-fashioned physical SIM card.

How does the eSIM code actually look like that you entered?

Something like this:

LPA:$1[some.website.com]$ALONG-ACTIV-ATION-CODE

(Just to be sure: please don’t show actual activation codes here)

Don’t know if it helps, but I use a German congstar esim in my FP5 (that was shipped to Germany). But I do not have /e/ installed, so might be something to do with that.

hi @fault1er

have you already tried to manually add the code?
