No Global Internet IPv6 via Wifi Hotspot

Hello,

I’ve set up a Wifi hotspot on my Fairphone 5 - 5G, running Android 14.

This hotspot works correctly in ipv4 but not in ipv6.

Here’s the result from https://test-ipv6.com:

Here are my Fairphone’s Internet connection details (French provider Bouygues Telecom):

IP address:

  • fe80::e816:47ff:fee9:bff7
  • 192.168.1. 168
  • 2001:861:8b91:6620:e816:47ff:fee9:bff7
  • 2001:861:8b91:6620:3cbf:e12b:3d96:b31d

Here’s the WiFi information for my Fedora 41 connected to the hotspot:

  • IPv4 address: 192. 168.181.213
  • IPv6 address: fe80:8032:2844:2d19:5e97
  • Default route: 192.168.181.186
  • DNS: 8.8.8.8, 192.168.181.186

Do you have any idea why my Fedora receives a “Link-local address” IPv6 ( fe80:) and not a “Global Internet” IPv6 (2001:)?

Best regards,
Stéphane

Hi and welcome to the community forum.

Your phone’s hot-spot cannot offer IPv6 connectivity if the phone’s mobile data connection has no IPv6 connectivity.

To check this out,

  • turn OFF Wi-Fi on the phone
  • turn ON your mobile data connection on the phone
  • with the phone’s browser, go to test-ipv6.com
and see if you get an IPv6 address.

If you don’t get an IPv6 address, then check your APN details, in particular the “APN protocol” setting. This should be “IPv4/IPv6”. If it’s not, I recommend checking with your provider Bouygues.

If you do get an IPv6 address then we’ll look further.

When I initially checked my PC’s Internet connection through the FP5’s hot-spot, I had no IPv6 address, but I found that the PC’s network card driver’s property was turned off for IPv6.
It now works as it should:

P.S. - a word about VPN and IPv6:
In my experience popular VPNs are not yet fully IPv6-ready. Some, like Proton, are nearly there, but it’s quite likely that using a VPN would interfere with your devices’ IP settings.

Yes, my phone mobile data connection has IPv6 connectivity as indicated in this part of my message:

I don’t understand why, when I haven’t changed anything, 3 days later I’ve just done another test and this time I’ve got an ipv6 connected via my Bouygues 5G hotspot  :

I’m “closing” this thread, my problem is fixed.
