New FP5 poor quality sound

Hi everyone,

I just received my new Fairphone 5.

After some use I’m happy with it, except the speaker audio quality sounds rather bad.

Comparing with my previous google pixel 4a (that has been sabotage by google -_- ), music sound distant, flat and a bit robotic.

That is quite a bummer since I listen to a lot of music and podcast without headphones on.

I’m wondering if there is something specifically wrong with my phone, have you got a similar experience?

If everything works as expected, would anyone know if Fairphone is planning to sell better speaker in the future to upgrade this feature?

Thanks

Hmmm, I never knowingly heard a Pixel phone but I think the stereo speakers of the FP5 sound quite good. On max volume the sound gets a bit distorted depending on what is playing but on around 80% it always sounds clean to me. Alternatively you could buy a bluetooth-speaker. That would also be a upgrade to the Pixel-phones speaker.

Sounds a bit dramatic. What did they sabotage? Or do you mean that the updates stopped? The update policy was known when you bought it. Usually Pixels get a bit longer their updates than advertised.

I had a Pixel 3. And yes, that speaker quality was superb compared to a Fairphone. It’s just the sad truth. Maybe the FP6 will have better speakers. The FP5 is actually a nice improvement compared to the FP4.

Some Pixel 4a have a problem with their battery, that might swell or misbehave in a different way.
So Google released an update in January 2025, that reduced charging speed and capacity. Some 4a are now nearly unusable, because the battery doesn’t last a day anymore.
As a compensation you can have 50$ on your bank account, 120$ as a voucher for purchases in the Google store or a new battery without charge, if you send in your phone.
All of that and the real reason for the update was communicated very badly, so a lot of people still using the Pixel 4a are quite upset, saying that Google ‚destroyed‘ their phones.

Thanks for the replies!

As @Incanus explained the nerfed battery capacity of my 4a make it unusable, so I’m part of the upset people

I would have liked a battery replacement, since everything works fine beside that, but Google don’t propose this option where I live (France).

My goal was to keep my phone as long as possible, it made 3 year and without the update of death I’m sure I could have kept it much longer.

That is why I chose the FP5 as a replacement since it seems like the most durable option.
Concerning the speaker I understand they had to make choices to limit the price… I guess I will keep using my 4a as a radio.

If someone from Fairphone is reading : the current speaker piece is only 25€, which is great, but if you are considering selling another one with better audio quality at a higher price, I would definitely be interested :slightly_smiling_face:

I would never expect outstanding audio quality from a loudspeaker as big as a pinhole.

That’s indeed not great. Especially since the P3 series didn’t have big batteries.
