My FP4 loses a lot of settings on every reboot

Every time my FP4 is turned off it looses settings about battery limitation of apps, access permissions on memory on some apps, install permission, etc.

A bit similar to this.

What can I do?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

  • Please indicate your OS build number as shown in Settings > About phone > Build number.
  • Could you cite some examples of apps that are losing their settings?
  • Do you have more than one account configured on your phone?

Do you mean Storage access? If so, some apps may need a ā€œSpecial app accessā€ called ā€œAll files accessā€. You’ll find that in Settings > Apps > Special app access.

Hi,

OS build number: FP4.TP2N.C.0128.20241030

apps that are losing their settings:
install permission - FFupdater, Obtainium, Droid-ify, Aurora store.
memory access permission: Fossify Files, Fossify Gallery, Material Files
battery optimization: all apps for which I set ā€œwith limitationā€; they are all set back to ā€œoptimizedā€

more than one account configured on your phone?
Which kind of account? On Settings > Password and Accounts I have MyFairphone account, a couple of Google accounts, DAVx5, WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal

some apps may need a ā€œSpecial app accessā€ […]
Yes, I know, but those granted permission are erased as well and I need to give them again every time.

In English language, the three possible values are : Unrestricted / Optimised / Restricted.
If you want an app to run unimpeded in the background, you need to select the first value, ā€œUnrestrictedā€.

I think we are talking about ā€œstorageā€, not ā€œmemoryā€ (which term in English is usually employed when speaking about short-term RAM). Please use the word ā€œstorageā€ if that is indeed what you mean. It’s important to avoid confusion, thanks.

Sorry, I meant ā€œmultiple usersā€ in Settings > System > Multiple users.

I’m very sorry, I’ve always used my phones in Italian language.

About battery: all apps for which I set ā€œrestrictedā€; they are all set back to ā€œoptimizedā€.

Yes I mean access to internal storage.

Only one user.

Sorry for the delayed reply.

I’m not seeing this on my phone (same OS version). Over the years there have been various episodes when settings got reset after a reboot, such as the post you referred to which is from 2019, and two or three years ago with Android 13 for instance. But if I’m not seeing the problem then it’s likely not an OS problem, or at least not directly. I’ve seen no other complaints recently.

Do you have any app installed on your phone that might be interfering? I’m thinking of MDM (company phone mobile fleet management), or some app that you’ve installed that has elevated privileges?
Look under Settings > Apps > Special app access > Device admin apps
and
Settings > Apps > Special app access > Modify system settings.

Also, I see that you’re rather in favour of FOSS. That’s great, but have you maybe made changes to Android services? Maybe disabled some services?

I checked, but there aren’t any ā€˜Device admin apps’ activated, and for ā€˜Modify system settings’ there are only Google play services and Dialer/Phone.

Uhm, I actually made some debloating, but as far as I remember the problem happened already before I did anything.
Well, perhaps there is nothing we can do. It’s is not an enormous problem, I just need to remember checking those settings when I turn off and on on my phone :man_shrugging:

Unlikely!
It might be an idea to have a Fairphone Angel have a look at it, if there’s one near you (check out the map). Sometimes these things pop out at you as soon as you get the phone in your hands and start poking about.
:magic_wand:

So it happened from the start? If yes, did you import (backup/restore) settings from a different phone when you were setting up your phone or did you configure/install it from scratch?

I was having similar behaviour of resetting battery optimization every reboot on certain apps on my FP5. It turned out for me that it was caused by those apps being installed on the sdcard which had been setup as the internal storage instead of portable storage .

Moving those apps from sdcard to internal storage made the battery optimizations persist properly.

Settings → Storage → ā€œSamsung SD cardā€ → Apps → The app in question, e.g. Telegram FOSS → Storage used → Change → Internal shared storage

I believe this to be a general Android bug. I feel it is just not getting a lot of attention, as there is very few phones with a micro SD slot and probably even fewer people using the ā€œformat as internal storageā€ feature.

In any case, it was posing a very big problem to me as it made all messengers unusable. But now it works perfectly and I am happy with my FP5.
