Mobile data connection breaks after few minutes using dual SIM

Any update here? I am experiencing exactly the same problem as from yesterday (although I did not make any OS update).

Key difference: I am based in Canada (I have been using my FP4 from here since 2 years).
I have 2 sim cards:

  • 1 FR (physical)
  • 1 CA (e-sim)

Welcome to the forum and community.

Thanks for your input. The only explanation I can think of would be some change with one (or possibly both) of your network operators, which leads you to now experience the same problems as outlined in the posts above. Please read through from the top and check out the work-arounds. And please also make sure you report your problem to official Fairphone support.

Can all contributors please always indicate your current build number, whether youā€™ve just updated or not, thanks.

Thanks for your reply, @OldRoutard !

I put the Italian SIM back into the phone and activated it and turned off 4G, 4G Calling and Wifi-Calls. It worked for a while, but then the connectivity started again to have issues. So I disabled the Italian SIM again without removing it from the FP4 this time.

I agree with you that disabling the SIM is better than removing it, but it is still a bad solution for me because I cannot receive calls on my Italian number.

I will contact the Fairphone support. Thanks for your help!

Best,
Bruno

This problem after last update. Operator and sim, sim settingsā€¦ not the reason. The phone worked fine before with both SIM cards. Now one SIM must always be turned off for the Internet to work or calls to be made. If you turn on both, the mobile Internet does not work and there is always an exclamation mark. Last summer I suffered with the fading backlight. this with SIM cards. In addition to this, the screen cannot be written with one hand; you constantly need to touch the body with the other. The phone lying on the table does not work properly with one hand! Wonderful phone)

I have the same problem since switching my main provider to physical SIM and the secondary one to eSIM. What worked for me to restore connectivity is changing the ā€˜Preferred network typeā€™ option to 3G for the SIM card that is not being used for mobile data at the moment. I will need to see if this keeps working in the long run though.

I have the same issue, and I just realised it started when I downloaded a second eSIM for a dataplan when on holiday abroad (Airalo eSIM in Mexico).

To use that Airalo eSim for data I deactivated my regular ā€œhomeā€ eSim (from Odido NL) as only one eSim can be active at a time, so I had the Airalo SIM active then. During my holidays I was pretty frustrated the dataplan I bought from Airalo didnā€™t work as I expected, but I blaimed it to bad mobile coverage in Mexico.
When returning back after holiday I deactivated the Airalo eSim and activated my regular eSim again. Recently I switched provider to Ben instead of Odido, so I downloaded a new eSim and deactivated the Odido eSim, but did not remove it. I did remove the Airalo eSIM already earlier, but I cannot recall whether I had the connection issues in that short period of time I only had one eSim on my phone.
BTW, I have a physical SIM (KPN NL) as well which is active/inserted all the time, but also when switching Internet/Mobile Data connection to that SIM, the issue persist.

As I just realised it started when downloading and activating the Airalo eSim, it came to mind that maybe the phone cannot handle multiple eSimā€™s although only one eSim is activated and the other one(s) are set to inactive. Does this make sense to anyone?

So I have just removed the inactive eSIM (which I donā€™t need anymore anyway), so Iā€™m testing now whether this might resolve the issues with having no mobile connection (both data and phone), as I have tried all the other suggestions like APN-reset and preference set to 4G instead of 5G., but didnā€™t help at allā€¦

Iā€™ll keep you informed if this eSIM removal solves this extremely annoying issue.

I have a similar problem for a while now, when using both SIM cards. I keep on loosing all connectivity (network, wifi, and bluetooth) multiple times a day.

I notice it when listening to music (via BT) and the music stops briefly. Checking my phone I see the exclamation mark for the network connections and the wifi reconnecting. Wifi does not always reconnect back though and I find my phone without wifi while not having moved out of reach of the wifi. I need to turn off/on wifi, to get wifi back.

I also notice when I am doing a messenger call on wifi. In a 10 min call, I lost wifi and network connection mutliple times and I had to wait for reconnection.

I will try this with 4G (3G did not give me a network signal) and a quick messenger test call on wifi worked now.

ā€¦ and this kinda reminds me now of the reboot issues after the Android 13 upgrade. We also had to disable 5G (for both SIMs) as a workaround until they fixed the problemā€¦ ::

Same issue here: dual-SIM (eSIM + physical). Both appear to lose the connectivity quickly and show an exclamation mark next to the cell coverage icon.

Fixes tried (without success)
Turning off and on again the phone solve briefly the issue, as does going in flight mode and exiting it, and turning off the SIM profile then on again.
Iā€™ll try the fix given in Mobile data connection breaks after few minutes using dual SIM - #45 by mad526.
Edit: this seems to do the trick! :partying_face:thank you @mad526!

Other symptoms
The loss of coverage breaks the internet connexion and the calls, but not the WiFi. Connexion can sometimes be recovered by itself (I had the case of losing both, then receiving a call on the physical SIM and then the eSIM rediscovered it could access the internetā€¦).
It seems that the eSIM has more often the issue, but I may only notice it because Iā€™m using it more often.

It seems linked to FP4 with dualSIM loses network connection on a regular basis - #9 by bm90001 as well (as mentioned earlier).
I also notice a significant battery drain at night, I check this post, without success: FP4 battery life got worse after Android 13 update - #179 by Lars_Hennig.

I contacted support (again) and their suggestion to reseting the APN settings for both SIM cards (step 1 - see below) seems to have done the trick now.

Here is what they suggested for my problem - FYI:

Step 1: APN settings

Your APN settings affect how your Fairphone 4 connects with the network. To check if they are causing issues:

  1. Reset your APN settings.
  2. Depending on your network operator, you might need to set your APN settings manually.

Note, youā€™ll need to do this step separately for each SIM card youā€™re using, including eSIMs.

Step 2: Service test

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Dial *#*#2886#*#* in the same way you enter a phone number to make a phone call. Once the last character is introduced, the Service Menu appears (be patient, this can take a few seconds).
  3. Select Manu.
  4. Tap on SIM and/or eSIM. You should see sim card is OK and/or ESIM is ok.
  5. Choose FAIL or PASS accordingly based on the result of the test and let me know how it went.

Step 3: Check with your network operator

Contact your operator and ask if thereā€™s currently a network outage in your area - a local cell tower might be damaged or some of their services might be down due to a settings error.

Step 4: Reinstall your SIM card

Reinstall your eSIM card.

Remove your SIM card and check it for any visible damage.
Note that physical SIM cards are small electronic devices and can be damaged or become faulty with time. If your physical SIM card is older than 2 years or looks scratched, ask your operator to issue you a new one. A new SIM card can fix a lot of unexpected issues.

Step 5: Try a couple of different SIM cards

Borrow a couple of SIM cards from family members or friends and test them on your device. Itā€™s best if you try with at least one card from the same provider and one from a different provider. Repeat Step 1 for each SIM card you try.

If another SIM card works well, it means something is wrong either with your SIM card or your contract/data plan. Please, contact your provider if thatā€™s the case.

Does your SIM card work in another phone?

Same problem here. Me and my wife both have a FP4 but i have two different operators and my wife have the same. I am having problems and my wife none.
My Esim: KPN and normal sim: Vodafone
My wife Esim: KPN and normal sim: KPN

Resetting APN settings fixed it for me. The access points.were different after resetting so I guess I was using outdated configuration.

I tried all the above and also updating APN settings but didnā€™t solve it so then I simply deleted the APN of the Sim (physical) thatā€™s not used for web connection (though internet Access was anyhow prohibited in the settings).

Update: esim still looses connection though having the newest APN settings, while changing cell tower in a moving train or other vehicle. Simultaneously with the physical sim. So this is also no solution.

Latest Nov 2024 Update also doesnā€™t solve it.

Update: while switching cell towers while commuting, both sim cards, physical and esim still lose the connection. So itā€™s definitely related to the esim. Turning off 5G doesnā€™t solve it either. As Iā€™ve a new motherboard exchanged by Fairphone this is 100% a software issue.

I have been having troubles with loosing connections recently again. So reseting the APN settings solved it only for a short time. I have turned off 5G for the eSIM now, and it has been slightly better, but not completely resolved.
My phone also has problems (re)connecting to known Wifis, again slightly improved since turning 5G for the eSIM off.

This is all based on my impressions. I donā€™t have time or motivation to properly troubleshoot this problem anymore, itā€™s been a problem for too long. I have reported it twice to the support, both times I got slightly different troubleshooting instructions and both times it seemed to have been resolved (but only temporary as it turns out).

I just want and need a phone that works with 2 SIMs!

I do have the same issue. I have an eSIM (klarmobil German Telekom network) which I primarily use for mobile data and a physical SIM (premiumsim, German o2 network). Rarely both can connect to the network and mostly only for a short period. I tried all suggestions above. For me, it only helps to deactivate one SIM and reactivate it again but since both stop working shortly after the ā€œworkaroundā€ to have a functional SIM is to permanently deactivate one of themā€¦

Fairphone 4
Android 13 (TKQ1.230127.002)

I own the same problems:

My Fairphone has not provided me with data access for some time now. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesnā€™t. The providers are displayed and telephony works (most of the time).

I use an eSIM and a SIM (Vodafone). Since I have changed one of my providers, I can confirm that the old eSIM (O2) and the new eSIM (Telekom) have the same connectivity problem.

What I have tried:

  • Deleted APNs and set them up again: No improvement
  • Tested SIM in other phone (works there)
  • Adjusted network type (5G-3G): No improvement.

I opened a ticket now.
