Am I the only one missing a true (OLED) dark mode on the FP5?
I find it a pity that the menu’s, phone app, message app, etc. on the FP5 are rather dark-gray instead of truely black (which is possible with an OLED).
I’ve reached out to customer support about this on Oct 21, 2023 and they responded to me with: “Fairphone OS is based on stock Android and we don’t regulate the colors that are used, except for the Settings screen and the MyFairphone App. Everything else is always up to the developers of the apps themselves.”
and “If you care about the Settings screens in dark mode - research shows that most people prefer dark, but not truly black background. Therefore our design team has chosen to follow these guidelines for our dark mode”.
So am I still one of the few truly missing this feature? I wish the FP5 had like other phones/apps just had a third profile, i.e., light, dark and OLED dark mode.
It’s surprising that the FP5 doesn’t offer a true black mode, given OLED’s capabilities. A third profile option, like “OLED dark,” would align well with Fairphone’s focus on user choice and sustainability.
Take a completely black JPEG image (create it yourself or from the Internet) and use it as a background image. Then the background is actually black. This also saves a lot of battery power.
This thread is about a different issue — being that the black pixels didn’t turn off, versus this thread which asks for a setting to make UI backgrounds 100% black.
It’s also incorrect that this is still an issue. The Jan 31 update fully fixed the black pixels issue, which multiple replies in that thread confirm.
