I bought a micro SD to increase storage. To install I need to format it as either portable (recommended) or internal. As I have run out of space I would need to add apps to the microSD. Would anyone have any experience of this?
It is highly recommended to not format an sd card as internal storage, because it leads to issues. However, that also means you can not move apps to the sd card.
When you format as portable storage, you can move your photos and videos to the sd card to free up internal space.
If you don’t have any media you can move to the sd card to free up internal space, an sd card will not solve your problems.
I would also recommend to use the SD as portable storage und use it for your media, this usually needs the biggest amount of storage.
It has the following advantages:
- your media is stored safe in case your phone dies
- phone will operate without potential problems when the SD card is missing or defect
- SD card can be easily switched to another/new device
- SD cards are usually slower than the internal storage of a phone, so the system could feel laggy when running apps from the SD card
Also, formatting the SD as internal will very likely lead to loss of data from the SD card.
Just dont do it, although it wont be encrypted
You might want to check Settings > Storage to find a more specific breakdown of what is taking up most space. Apps themselves usually take just very little space, it’s the data used and produced by them that takes much more space.
Photos and videos made by yourself with a camera app are usually all in the DCIM folder, separate from the camera app.
Thank you for your replies. My apps take up ~75% of my storage. All my music is on Spotify so accessed via the app. My photos and videos are done with Google photos. I don’t really have much non-app to store. My FP5 has 128GB storage
Some apps allow their data to be stored in sdcards. One example is osmand, where you can store the map data (many GB) in the card. It is usually handled via the app settings.
