Microphone issue / bottom module

People are telling me that they can’t clearly hear me on the phone. Especially when i set them on speakerphone.

My first thought was hey, this is where the fairphone shines! I guess the bottom module is responsible for the mic?

If thats the case, then there’s a problem. I cannot find this part anywhere.

Am i thinking correctly? And is fairphone out of spare parts?

Welcome to the Community Forum.

Starting with the Fairphone :four:, the microphones are not replaceable by the user anymore (on the FP4, they are part of the Mainboard). Bottom modules were only available for the FP2 and FP3.

The FP4 has a total of three microphones (1 mm holes at the top and bottom end and one on the left-hand long side). In some cases, users accidentally cover the one on the long side.

You can check your microphone hardware with the extensive range of hardware tests that you can access by dialling (in the telephone app) the following code * # * # 2 8 8 6 # * # * These hardware tests are only available in Fairphone’s default Android OS, not in custom ROMs like /e/OS.

If you can confirm a hardware issue, the next step I would suggest is consulting support.fairphone.com The chat option on working days from 10-12 am is usually the most direct way to get some help.

All FP4 Users (me included) have this problem.

Get another Phone and never come back to FP is my advice.
You will get no support from this company

several yes and def not all…and when its a hardware fault (what we dont know yet) and its under warranty even if it takes time one can get help. Yes support isnt great, however your statements are exaggerated.

When I dial the code you suggest for troubleshooting nothing happens?

Are you on Android OS?

I’m on Android 15 so no custom

you should be able to access the internal tests through the My Fairphone App

This is an annoying problem that will likely not be solved. There are several related threads on it. Speakerphone sound is not usable on FP4 (on the other size they won’t hear you). When I bought the phone my intention was to used it 8+ years. I am still using it but the annoyance of this BASIC issue not being fixed makes me switch away from FP whenever I need to get a new phone. Unfortunately as I do like the concept. It is the implementation that is lacking

the problem in my eyes is, that there are issues reported for calls since the beginning, however people have many different issues (some on Loudspeaker others on old-school “ear-calls” and others dont have issues at all. That makes it difficult to fix, when its not hardware related. So what does the hardware test say when you test?
As mentioned in the german topic, it was reported by others that had issues, that such things can be caused by taking over system settings from previous phones. So did you ever contact support? Did you try a factory reset to set up from scratch? Yes sure thats annoying as well however for me it would be less annoying then to struggle with this for years.

I never took settings from previous phone. From the existing threads it is clear this is a SW issue that is unlikely to be fixed at all for FP4

Not trying to be pedantic here. Believe me if I would have a fix I am completely satisfied and will be loyal to FP. But this issue simply is not going to be addressed as I understand it.

I want to be pedantic
there are issues thats true and those exist since the beginning. Its also true there are different issues with calls and there are different root causes. So in your case it might be a SW issue that probably FP could fix with an OS update, I dont know. Did you ever report it to them, and what was their reponse?

While the OP might very well have the same issue you have, I will not conclude that fast its not fixable in another way until everything else was excluded

and just to link “the mother” of a topics reg. call quality issues.

You may want to be pedantic, i don’t. But want to be precise. When i had to send it in to Fairphone in France i had all the hustle to register banking apps etc. on the other phone i had to buy to continue work. After sending the phone in twice, it always came back - with no errors found - software updated. Yay. I sent a precise description of the problems i had and never stated the microphones to be faulty, but this was the description that they reported for diagnosis - and of course the microphones were not faulty - they diagnosed. Did a quick test, after Robin from Fairphone came back to me to ask if everything is ok now. The test of two calls was not too bad. B u t when i sold the phone yesterday the buyer did a test and had the same trouble trying to speak handsfree. He said it is not his priority, since he will put the phone to his ear while on calls. He’s happy and i’m soo happy too to let it go. After three years with this rather expensive product i can say It was such a bad phone to do everyday work with it. When people can’t hear you! I wish the project the best though. Its important to try to make products less exploiting to humans and nature as well as better repairable and long lasting. Unfortunately it seems that it is too difficult to build a solid alternative in this segment?

I am a bit tired of suggestions related to HW failure. When using speakerphone in apps, there is no problem. So that rules out HW related issues. The drivers are unlikely to ever get fixed, see related thread below
