Mic doesn't work on normal calls (works in WhatsApp, signal)

I tried reading some articles on here. No luck yet. It did briefly work but revert to not working. I can see sound gets to phone, just doesn’t get from phone to actual voice call

Hello Kanishka,

I suggest you to write to the offical supprt because this seems to be a bigger problem.
There are a lot of cases like your, also for me with my Fairphone 4.
I already wrote the CS about that problem.
I had to sent in my microphone, even after I told them that the Microphone works perfectly on whatsapp hands free calls an so on, but not on normal hands free calls.
Well they changed the microphone and I got it back.
No improvement I had the same problem.
At the end they gave me a new phone but it didn’t help too, like I told them.
After all the CS wrote me that they found the error.
Since I was curious about it i asked them what the fault is.
They answered me that they can’t tell me it because they aren’t so deep in this topic.
WHAT?!

I assume it’s a simple software problem because I also tested the microphone with the test mode provided by Fairphone and it works perfectl.y

Thanks. I live in US, so I can’t send my phone back, but I will try to find an official support contact.

I suspect it’s some setting in Android

Thanks for posting this. I have had the same problem a couple of weeks ago for a few days and have been trying to debug on my side without success.

Good to know it’s a general (and thus hopefully software) problem. Does anyone have a reference where this is described and when we can expect a fix?

Thanks,
Frank

A general issue? I count 2 people reporting this. The FP4 issue has nothing to do with the FP5. So you are no longer facing the issue? Did you report to support?

Thats def not a bigger Problem so far for the FP5, so please dont imply issues are overarching through devices as long as there is no evidence for this. FP4 and FP5 dont share software.

As you are in the US which OS do you use? Which provider do you use? Did you try to disable 5G, VoLTE, Wifi-Calling? In case you use FPOS is the Google App having acces to the mic all the time? It it on loudspeaker calls and/or calls with earspeaker used?

There are so many posts about this certain problem.
So in my opinion this is a well known problem.
And yes I wrote the support as I already wrote in my post above, which you read…

For the FP4 not the FP5! And as this here is a FP5 topic its irrelevant whats buggy on the FP4! Or where did I miss all the posts for the FP5?

If you would have ready my post then you could clearly see that my post is about the FP4 and there is no reason to shout…
And why did you say that they are sharing the same software?
So now I’m assuming that they share the software with the same problems.

With your post in a FP5 topic

you imply its a general issue for the FP5, which is just wrong and thats all I said.

And reg. Software share: done doesnt make any sense as you might see, and its corrected to dont now.

Use android, nothing specialized. I bought from Fairphone and turned it on as is

T-Mobile

Haven’t tried disabling 5g or volte. I have wifi calling disabled

Calls with earspeaker used

So far, I notice it happens most days. I tried to get it to correct again now (restarting didn’t help) and this time I made a test call and kept toggling on speakerphone and somehow it started working after that. So I will try toggling speaker phone in a test call each morning for now.

FPOS is not tested/supported with US provider thus can cause issues for US user

Read this topic, I think it was mentioned there several times for the FP4.

I’m having exactly the same issue. I’m also on my second FP5 after they sent me a new one and it has exactly the same issue. According to someone on Reddit (pinch of salt) it’s to do with 4g and WiFi calling, but I don’t have the ability to turn 4g calling off so can’t test it.

A post was split to a new topic: FP3 call/mic issues

Speaker toggle in middle of first call works consistently so far. And problem only seems to reappear after phone restart

ah thanks for tagging me @yvmuell and glad to hear @kanishka that the “speaker toggle method” still works. I have actually already moved on for a while to CalyxOS (from LineageOS) on my FP4 and a while ago I noticed an update that mentioned the FP4 mic May 2024 Bugfix update . I can’t find the git commit quickly, but IIRC, it mentioned disabling noise cancellation for the FP4 because it kept causing trouble. since I never hear myself on the phone, I have no clue what effect it has on the other side, but I am making calls without problems.

I think when I switched to CalyxOS (i.e. before the mentioned update) I also did not needed to do the “speaker toggle” anymore, but no clue if sound quality of the mics was bad.

I guess bottom line is that it seems like a software issue with noise cancellation that can be bypassed if your OS is willing to do so.
