The strange thing really is, that I can not find the downloaded update package (either as img nor as zip file) anywhere on the phone.

Another information I found. If automatic update does not work you can try to do it manually. first check if the update has been downloaded correctely; you can find it in directory root:/data/lineageos_updates boot into recovery mode, choose the zip and install.
