If I may, are you really 100% sure? Because these LEDs can be controlled through developper’s options, Service Menu, Services Test, meaning that a software can control them, not only when the battery is charging or low.
So maybe there is still hope that on a next OS upgrade, these LED will be functioning for notifications?
Yes for me it’s a dealbreaker, because most of the time my phone lays on the table and only this little light tell me to switch it on.
I don’t care for best cpu, camera, display etc, I could deal with the lack of FM radio, but lack of notification light is a show stopper for me.
Anyway I will not decide what to do next this year, so there is still hope.
Having the same issue - no LED notifications. However, reading the reply of the support, what I understand is that there are no LED options assigned to notifications. This does not mean that there are no LED notifications, it only means you cannot change the light colour.
I hope I am right because otherwise this would be a show stopper for me, too. I still can’t believe this could be the case since LED notifications have been a standard feature for many years now.
Nowadays, a color LED isn’t much more expensive than a one color LED. That’s why the whole Chroma hype and hype of putting LEDs in your PC case is kinda ridiculous (as it barely has a function). It is hard to imagine they decided to save costs on such a feature.
perfect! How did you get them to say that? They just told me that the LED is not meant for notifications
Totally looking forward to less-stress-because-not-constantly-turning-on-phone-to-check-for-possible-notifications
LED notification for Fairphone 3 is only dedicated to charging statuses. It is unfortunately not a feature to assign LED colors to notifications or other statuses.
We will report your feedback to our developers for future implementations. So maybe in the future, indeed.

yes, it has to be the software. Though I don’t think it’s technically a software “issue” if it was just never implemented because of business decisions.
First I got this:
Thanks for your message, and sorry for my late reply!
I checked this with my colleagues in the tech team, and apparently this is a general issue related to the notifications. Our developers are investigating it. We hope to fix it with the next update. Please, wait for it.
Then:
My colleagues just told me that LED notification for the Fairphone 3 is only dedicated to charging statuses. It is unfortunately not a feature to assign LED colors to notifications or other statuses, so it’s not a bug but a design decision.
I will report your feedback to our developers for possible future implementations. I know we already finished this discussion, but I wanted you to know.
I have to be honest: I don’t know why this feature hasn’t been implemented yet. Many users are asking for it, so I guess our development team is going to do its best to get it to you as far as possible.
So at least they seem to be aware that people noticed it’s missing
btw, I also asked support if there is some kind of API so I could implement it myself, but as expected they don’t know these technical things on that support level
