Is a FP6 the right phone for me?

Hey there,

I am looking into possibly getting a Fairphone since the Pixels I had before all died pretty much after two years. I’m tired of having USB Ports die like flies and if I sold my Pixel 9 (256GB) now, I would be able to afford a Fairphone.

I know the camera can’t match a Pixel, but how bad is it really? Or does it work well enough, given proper lighting?

How is performance? I’ve read about a bug where the phones tends to freeze for a minute or two, but apparently this is already being worked on? Is 8GB RAM enough? Mainly I use social media and watch videos.

I absolutely love the fact you can insert microSD!

For those who own one, which color did you pick? I’m torn between green and black (not a fan of white).

Lastly, does everything else run smoothly? Anything you don’t like?

Thanks!

compi

You can look here to see what pictures you can make with the fp6.

It is good for daily usage if you don’t need to zoom in.

Performance is good i guess. I only use it for browsing and it lasts a workday

Welcome to the community forum.

Magnetic USB adapters are readily available to prevent this.
Unless you need to connect USB-OTG devices often, which will most probably not work via magnetic adapters.

Make sure to read a bit on this forum about the customer service experience of a lot of customers. The mission of Fairphone is great, the current status of service level not so much unfortunately.

You should know security updates are not every month.

so far there was one every month for the FP6 and also for the FP5 they are quite constant in offering monthly updates?

Pixel phones have the September patch. This is not the case neither for the FP5 nor for the FP6.

And this is for people who have a provider releasing the update on time and not two months later. So it could be important to know compis provider.

I am not aware of providers holding back Updates?

Even so, I’m sure that as long as you’re not using some dubious websites you’re fine with being one or two months behind.

There are like VF in DE.

Yeah but as discussed in length in other topics FP is not Google.

@all please stop a detailed debate on update policy here and check others topics

Yes, and there are many topics explaining how is the FP6 so should you close this one ?

What you consider as a switch in the discussion to the update policy would not have been if you had not try to correct me when I stated the updates are not as fast as for Pixel phones. Coming from a Pixel this is an important information to have according to me.

Updates and the camera are the main advantages of Pixels, self reparation and fairness are the most important points of Fairphone phones. Then people choose having all the information.

This is not what you stated initially

And sure I will correct incorrect infos if I want.

So kindly just accept, to not futher discuss the update policy here, I linked topics for this, which is the way to go instead of duplicating things.

And when you think this topic here is a duplication, flag it and link the topic it should be merged to.

Well coming from a pixel 6 pro it’s overall an improvement.

I found that the 8gb of ram where more than enough and I use quite a few apps.

Especially for your use case that should be enough.

Comparing the cameras with the cameras from my pixel 6 pro, it’s complicated. The main camera on my pixel 6 pro is way better it ajust to light better and shows more detail.

The camera of the Fairphone 6 struggles depending on the lighting, some photos are good some are meh and some are bad.

One thing that the fairphone 6 does better is the supermacro mode it definitely captures more details In that area.

So yeah not the best camera, probably not horrible but if you value a good resolution maybe it’s not for you.

Videos I haven’t tested since I manage to brick my phone but that’s a whole other story and I’m going to send it to repair. And most likely isn’t going to happen in your usefase anyway.

Compared to my previous phone the phone runs quite smoothly and the Fairphone definitely has better performance. Now I don’t know how the performance compares to the pixel 9.

But it’ll run any app and even some games from luanti to things like destiny rising, so it’s well enough, for day to day use.

Here and there there are some small bugs but they haven’t bothered me.

Overall I think the phone is enough for your use case but don’t expect a premium phone, it’s also not a really cheat phone with tons of bloater that dies in a month, id say it feels really nice in the hand and you pay the price for better working conditions and the increased repairability and software updates that are out of date compared to Google pixel.

Like don’t buy this phone for software it’s just you average android.

I hope this helps

Ordered a black FP6 today. Will check it out, and if it fits I’ll keep it around. If not I can just return it.

So I flag your answer which is wrong since you wrote just after that people using Vodafone DE don’t receive them.

You are a moderator and so I can accept some things but not here. You corrected me saying something wrong. You could have simply send me a PM and ask me to precise what I said. But you decided to throw flames at me.

I said how Fairphone handles monthly updates but I didn’t discuss or complaines if it is good or not (I still owed an FP3 and don’t complain of the quarter updates since it is an old phone). So I should not write that in the thread you mentioned.

The topic here is about helping someone to decide if an FP6 is a good phone to replace her Pixel phone. The only way to do it is giving the differences. If we cannot give them all, then just close the thread and tell the person she can look at threads already existing.

Im going to ad something to my initial comment.

A few Begarices to consider when coming from a pixel 9 in your usecase.

You will get the bewest of android on the picel 9.

You will also get frequent security updates and you will have acces to installing graphene os which is a secure and private operating system. Also in terms of how the hardwear pixel phones are far more secure.

a pixel 9 pro in terms of raw power and raw software is definitly better than the fairphone. Way better camera and way better processor more ram and a usb 3.2 port. Also better screen battery life etc.

however reparebility is comparible worse and the sourcing of the material isn’t as fair as well the fairphone.

also storage upgrading is nonexistant on the pixel 9 pro.

now in terms of privacy.

both come with android althougth the pixel 9 pro comes with a newer version of android.

So yeah google is spying on you ghow ever you can debloat your device with tools like canta etc. (be carefull with that) and revoke permissions on google apps abd olay services. Alternatively you can install custom operating systems that are vased on the abdroid opensource project.

On google you have graphene os, lineage os and e few others and on fairphone you have /e/os, unnoficial lineage and iodeOS and more to come.

Over all graphene OS is the best OS in terms of security and also privacy. It.s much more secure than stock android and far more private so you will be missing out on that option.

The option on fairphone 6 that is even officially sold througth murena is /e/os wich is more private than stock os, but is mediocre overall, especcially when it comes to security, also there was the whole problem with murena silently implementing a speech to text feature that anonimizes user imput and sends it to openAI.

Either way lets sum it up

Getting a fairphone 6 from a pixel 9 pro is definitly a downgrade. However if you don’t mind loosing preformance and security aswell as really good canera quality, while getting a really good fingerprint reader, almost perfect reparebility, A microSD card slot and a cool switch on the side. Then sure go for it, but be realistic the fairphone 6 is not a flagship and more or less a midranfe phone from a few years back, however with better working conditions and fairer materials.

Ultimatly its your choice.

I would stick with the pixel and let the fairphone 6 mature a few years and see how they handle software updates etc.

Good luck either way and I hope you find the right phone for you

As long as you don’t need any support or repairs from fairphone or throw it away when it’s broken and buy a new one: it’s the right phone for you
