bought the FP6 wishing to keep it for years. 10 month later is going to be destroyed because repairing it costs more than the phone.
1 month in and both fairbuds case and fairphone lost the screw to keep it together
bought the screws and restored it
than went swimming with a buoy with a stounch pocked that leaked, maybe 1 spoon of water. a Phone IP55!!!
result ? repair over 500 euros.
using my old Pixel 7a that I treated far worse than the FP and it is a better Phone.
summary I went European, went repairable, went for recyclable and less than 10 month later I have been disappointed on all counts.
suport non existent, just bots and nothing
summary. if you can do not buy the FP
Welcome to the Fairphone community.
Although I can understand your disappointment to some degree, you flooded your phone with water, not the manufacturer. So if you hit a tree with your new car, although it has bumpers. it will be smashed. That’s not the fault of your car.
The Pixel 7a, which to be fair is a great phone, is rated IP67. This is comparing apples to oranges a bit as the Pixel 7a has the ability to be immersed in water for up to 30 minutes. The Fairphone’s rating is essentially "you can use it (for a limited time) in the rain and if a glass of water spills on it and you’re quick enough you have a very good chance that it will survive. Immersion, so especially if the ports come in contact with water, will most likely break it, unfortunately. I know this is disappointing and awful from a user experience and that the phone is not “cheap” by any stretch of the imagination but if taking the phone into a pool or the sea with you is an important feature for you, search for a stronger IP rating.
if you dismantle the phone and let it dry long enough, it will most likely survive, just the warranty will be voided.
hello
That was how one of my previous phones died so I spent some time learning about the process.
One of the first things a FP repair centre is doing is checking for any signs of water damage
Our phones contain several liquid contact indicators (LCI) inside the frame. Before performing any warranty repair, our team checks these indicators alongside signs of clear oxidation to verify if liquid reached the inside of your phone. Exposure to liquid, moisture, or dampness voids your warranty. Check our full conditions on the Fairphone legal page.
As a result, it is not always the best solution (especially if you happen to have a device which you can open) to send it in after the water damage.
There is an excellent water wiki on this forum, ✏ How to handle water damage
But in your case, I would pay to get a phone back, check it myself for corrosion, perhaps some parts might be still saved.
thank you. I will not. I have done all normal procedures after water damage. I have had lots of issues in the past. but the point is. if You sell Yourself as being different and then you behave exactly like any other, you are a company that does not deliver on your promises.
if repairing costs more than the phone…
two things
-
i did not fload my Phone. i have swam with phones by mistake and I know the difference and I also know salt water is tough.
-
I can accept this may not be a guarantee repair, though it is not me Who said it is IP55
what I cannot accept is a company that does not deliver on its core points.
if repairing a board costs more than the phone You are like anybody else except your phone costs more and performs worse (stunned how far better my Pixel 7a is performing)
I tested the staunch pocket. clearly made a mistake and have no problem swallowing the consequences
but again I bought FP to be ecologically responsible, if the repair costs more than the phone you are axactly like the others… marketing with no product behind
for anyone wondering, this is the current repair price list for out of warranty FP6
https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/37450191748370-Out-of-warranty-repair-costs-for-The-Fairphone-Gen-6-Gen-6
let me just add that community moderators (myself included) are not company reps. I would assume then that this “You” was metaphorically aimed at the company which is fine with me.
IP55 is not fully waterproof
You ofcourse was to the company. I am not upset at a person and as said I am not upset ath the void warranty. It is not me that said the Phone can be repaired. the Phone has problem charging, worked fine. Any need to change every bit of the Phone. I repeat I bought the FP out of social responsibility. Silly me but FP as a company highly disappointing. mediocre to be precise
For anybody wondering, here’s what the IP ratings mean … https://www.iec.ch/ip-ratings
I can understand the frustration, but …
“I feel hard done by, so everything Fairphone still does differently is void.” seems to be a recurring sentiment here in the forum.
Let’s just say it doesn’t work this self-centered way. Read Fairphone’s latest Impact Report here.
Knowing that the Pixel 7a will receive security updates until May 2028 (5 years of software support announced by Google) , there is nothing ecological in buying a new phone whereas the phone you owe works well (you wrote using your pixel 7a is one of the possibilities you now have after flooding your FP6).
cant afford a new phone every year, Pixel 7a had fisical dameges to the cameras. and i always have a back up phone. the one I ditched was over 6 years old (OPPO)
the company You chose for the repair needs to change everything on a working Phone not charging ? the cameras ? lets say FP are perfect and leave the dirty jop to the contractors.
Can I ask where you bought the phone and live? Your combination of userrname and using “delusion” when you seem to mean “disappointment” makes me think Italy. As far as I am aware and the website indicates, fairphone does not have local repair centers for that country, so it will probably be treated as out of warranty by whoever sold you the device? It may make sense to file a repair claim directly on fairphone.com and sending your phone in. Their result and options might be entirely different?
Sorry if that is the route you already took and you are angry at fairphone, but otherwise that might make sense (you need to have your proof of purchase still to start the repair).

Since you are answering my post … I didn’t choose it. You are still talking to fellow users here in a community forum as if you were talking to the company. You aren’t.
I would go along with questioning why an IP55 rating shouldn’t prevent water damage like the one you describe, but of course we weren’t there and haven’t seen it, and your style of arguing here does a great disservice to your cause.
IP55 indicates that a device is protected against limited dust ingress and can withstand low-pressure water jets from any direction. This rating is suitable for environments where occasional water exposure and dust are present.
you are right I am Italian though i did mean delusion, i.e. you think to have found a fair company but that does not exist.
this said everything was done via Fairphone website, thus the disappintment when FP support disappeared and repair Shop, I assume a separate company, proposed to substitute every single part that, it has to be said, seemed to be working fine after one week form the accident.
as said shame on me and so be it
I do apologise. it was very late at night, I am traveling and probably my English faltering. ofcourse I meant them, FP.
I am not arguing the meaning of IP55, nor am I assuming not to be at fault, though I reiterate I did non soak the Phone. I am disappointed by FP support, basically a Chatbot referring to Knowledge base, but more on the bill, I believe from a contractor, for repair of the Phone substituting every single part of the Phone. I will recover it and repair it myself, the warranty is gone anyway, everything on the phone, but the charging, was working fine I might get lucky
apart from that I will finally accept our future is chinese.
I’m not sure you’ll be able to repair it since they wanted to replace the motherboard, if I understood correctly. It might be worth asking them, before paying more to get your phone back. Good luck.
