Since I switched to my Fairphone 6, everyone I talked to on the phone noted that my audio sounds weird. I didn’t have this issue with my previous phone (not a Fairphone), and it’s apparently also noticeably worse than the audio quality of a landline call.
I used the Audio Recorder to record audio in low and high quality with the internal microphone(s). High quality sounds fine. Low quality sounds very muffled (even for low-quality phone audio) and it’s apparently exactly what my conversation partners are hearing.
I don’t have the MyFairphone app since I’m on /e/OS. I tried the Fairphone Checkup app from F-Droid - Mic 1 works okay, Mic 2 instantly produces a feedback loop. I don’t know if that test has any significance, given that it’s a ported app originally for the FP2 and hasn’t been updated in years.
After trying other apps to test the microphones – MicTest and Fossify Voice Recorder – I have concluded that the microphones in this particular phone can sound absolutely okay. I don’t know what the /e/OS voice recorder (org.lineageos.recorder) does exactly, but it’s not pretty. So it’s not a hardware issue!
Did anyone with /e/OS on a Fairphone 6 make similar experiences? Maybe the OS makes a difference? I admit that flashing a new OS for for a quick test seems a bit much…
Hi, I posted about this on the /e/os forum as well. I’ve now tried with other recorder apps (e.g. Audio Recorder by Dimitry Ponomarenko) that have given me very good results on other phones, and it is exactly the same as the lineageOS recorder. Distorted and with lots of noise. I know others have reported the same issue with videos, so it’s obviously the way the phone encodes mic signals rather than the app itself.
I experience the same issue on a brand new FP6 with eOS (3.3). The sound in phone calls apparently is very bad to the other person I tall to. Huge difference between the different voice recorders.
