It’s the standard preinstalled Messages app (named “Google Messages” in Play Store).
@Incanus: 1. I dropped the idea of a template. This just seems impossible in Android.
2. About the input field: the big box above seems appropriate to me. The minuscule field of max. 17 characters is not user-friendly.
At least for me. I’m disabled and need to be able to (re)read everything AT A GLANCE (and preferably as a whole) to correct it. A minimum would be a chunk of the phrase; i.e. at least 8 words or so.
Why not make BOTH fields dynamic and, if not, in a way which seems more natural and (especially) efficient (at least for me):
wouldn’t it be better to make the at east the INPUT TEXT FIELD dynamic?
EVEN MORE ASTONISHING TO ME: yesterday those worked fine: THE BOIG BOX was used to enter my message and I could use “Google Voice Typing” to speak the text which appeared in that big box. SO afterwards I could easily correct the text with the keyboard.
And nobody seems to know how it come yesterday all this worked fine.
PS; Google’s Help IS WRONG, it says:
Talk to write
1 On your Android phone or tablet, install Gboard.
2 Open any app that you can type with, like Gmail or Keep.
3 Tap an area where you can enter text.
4 At the top of your keyboard, touch and hold Microphone .
5 When you see “Speak now,” say what you want written.
But there is NO Microphone icon on the top of keyboard. Not since yesterday (and I just did an Fairphone update… which can’t be the cause can it?)
The little mike at the right of the mini input field is to make it an MMS… something I want to avoid for very good reasons.
And Voice Typing is activated in Gboard .
Aha upon my last review the microphone came back in notes (that is in the app “Keep n…”). Already one big improvement.
Now I just have to know, how to save (or copy) it and paste it into an SMS.
Ahaa the microphone is there too on top of the keyboard, when writing an SMS.
Maybe because i send so many feedbacks to Google?
So, main microphone problems are solved! GREAT.
What remains is: how to access an archived note in Messages?
In Messages I can see all kind of suff like: ”Unread, Known, Unknown, Starred, Images, Videos, Places & Links” but I don’t see any archived note! on whatever choice I click.
(alphabetically) @Incanus, @k3dAR, @Meaghan, @peci1, ¡¡¡MAIN MICROPHONE PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED!!!
I couldn’t keep track of all attempts I made. I changed settings in gBoard and System.
So now the microphone appears :mostly at the top right of the KEYBOARD (not the screen) and when writing an SMS, below the microphone (which makes it an MMS) and… that minuscule INPUT TEXT field isn’t so minuscule because it can show 3 lines!!!
Gboard: languages are OK (I’m writing in 3 languages). Preferences are OK, Voice Typing is (and was) OK, Share Gboard is OK
Settings: OK
What remains is: how to access an archived note in Messages?
In Messages I can see all kind of suff like: ”Unread, Known, Unknown, Starred, Images, Videos, Places & Links” but I don’t see any archived note! on whatever choice I click.
Who can tell me how to access text from Notes (the famous “Keep n…” app) in Messages?
I admit is truly DAMNED WELL KEPT, so well that I can’t access it nowhere… except in notes itself )-:
Dear @Sono
I am glad things are working out.
In the messages settings there is an option to keep this input box expandable, I am not sure how it is called though as my interface is in Polish
I am not a moderator here but let me risk overstepping here and suggest you refrain from using capital letters so much as they are usually associated with yelling?
On the archived messages , when I tapped my profile I could see this category but I do not have any archived messages, most likely because I have not archived any. Perhaps that is also your situation?
Good luck
as SMS “template”, you can use some app for text, example stock “Keep”:
- in top right “hamburger” menu, Create new label named “SMS”
- add note, in bottom-rigt 3dot menu, select Labels and set SMS
- all (and only) notes Taged/Labeled as SMS you can see from “hamburger”/Label/SMS
and after prepared “templates”, you can open specific note, 3dot menu:
“Send/Send via other apps” and select Messages…
about SMS input box, i think more peoples write you already
input box is auto-expanded while you type…
and you can change size of text/font of messages history AND input box using Pinch-To-Zoom In/Out gestures (if enabled “Messages/YourIcon/MessagesSettings/Pinch to zoom conversation text”)
about Archived, this is not about “backup” single message, but about per contact history, if example you in main windows swipe-to-right (make archivation) “John”, then whole messages with John is moved to YourIcon/Archived, and keep here until John write new message to you, or until you select in 3dot Unarchive
THANKS. Any idea where I can find that option (in Messages)? I don’t see nay settings-tab, icon, pop-up or scroll-down menu, which allows me to change (or simply set) settings.
Anyway: as I wrote somewhere. The input text field, is indeed expanding by itself. No idea how this came. Maybe it’s default now.
About capitals: it’s to stress what’s important to me. Example: THANKS si to express that really feel very grateful (and here I have to constrain me to not type VERY…).
It’s my way of expressing. If it sounds too loud for you… maybe use an ear protection device (like earbuds or earplugs)? LOL Or is this too cynical?
I’ll do my best. See next sentence:
Also when I write “damned well kept” in capitals, it’s to express my total disagreement of changing a small, clear title (= “Notes”) to something totally (always in my opinion) absurd saying “Keep”, so I made a joke that is is well kept. No idea how this app is called in Polish. In English it’s “Keep notes”, but you can see only “Keep n…”
Archives messages. Aaaaaahhhh I got it. When tapping the left arrow on the top and type the letter “a”, I get a list of all message, also the archived ones. Great (I toggled the CAPS LOCK in time:-)
But: I still can’t make it an SMS!
Seems I need more practice, I just re-discover how to see all my contact in Messages:
can see them all when I start a chat
Capitals: its really hard to read your texts, beside the yelling point already made. So I would also advice to dont do this and overall stick to the issue, making posts more comprehensive, which is helping those reading and answering.
THANKS. On my FP, the “hamburger” menu is at the top LEFT and I can indeed create a SMS label… but nothing more. The screen is blanc. No menu at the bottom. Just the keyboard which I did disappear I don’t know how, and then I got only the 3 bottom icons (white left arrow, circle, saure, all 3 in white).
(…)
Finally iI got a LABEL called SMS but
I’ve still no MyIcon in messages and… I had so many locked situations, that it exhausted me.
I become aware I have to practice a lot before going further. I’ve so many things to remember.
Let’s take something easy and very simple.
When I tap “Start chat” and indicate my provider, I see its my message = “CONSULT”, but I can’t resend it, can I? I can’t copy it, can I?
yes, it’s easy to retype; this is just an extreme simple and short example that will learn me how do it for real large texts and I can note it where I can find it back.
So now I ned a rest…
sorry, hamburger is on left
if screen is black, you don’t have any note created in selected label(/category), so simple create new with big “+” icon on bottom left
“MyIcon” you already know, in another thread you find it and talk about it as icon “D” (?) which is start letter of your account
anyway, maybe you don’t know, Keep notes you can read/create/edit/delete also on your PC, if in you browser you logged to same gmail account as on FP5, accessing this adress: http://keep.google.com
also messages can be accessed from PC on https://messages.android.com
but this need pair manualy with FP5 first… howto instruction is show on this page, if none is paired…
Thank you,
your kind and right.
I learned a lot, or better: I wrote down the basics, as my memory is not so enormous.
Many things are solved, and one strong item remains: how to transfer text to another app and… where the heck is the app Documents?
Documents seem to be accessible in all apps I need: Messages, Notes (wrongly called “Keep n.”) and Whatsapp. So I’m looking how to transfer a message or text from one of the 3 to one of the other 2. Even in one single app, I’m yet unable to copy a message already used (or send).
Sometimes there is a copy (+ paste) option, but often, I’ve to do so many other things first, that it is lost when I’m finally there.
OK, I’ve to practice, and practice.
PS : for the IMEI1 it was simple: thanks to @yvmuell
Settings > About phone > the IMEI1 & IMEI2 are on the near the end.
I don’t know about a standard app called “Documents”, but you can download apps like the free “Open Office Documents” or “Microsoft Word” from the “Play Store” app. You can save your template texts there and with a little practice copying and pasting them into your messages shouldn’t be a problem.
most of the time a longer tap on the text allows you to copy that. with messages what I found to be slightly annoying is that it allows you to copy one message at the time, it is not that easy to copy a piece of it. With keep notes I believe it is easier.
After copying, another long tap should allow you to paste it in any other app.
@moderators feel free (as always <3) to move this reply to the thread on writing a SMS
@mgkoeln: let me clarify. Maybe I’m wrong but, in any standard app using text (like “Keep n…” & Messages, I could see many times/sometimes an option called Documents which itself had many options like images, videos, places, links, pictures, audio, links etc. except TEXT and even ARCHIVE (available in Notes) is not mentionned.
In short: no text whatsoever.
So at that moment I thought: AHA, that’s how I can share (= COPY+PASTE) texts amongst apps; I have to go via Documents. Today, after my first days of my life with a smartphone, I don’t find this option Documents anymore.
Today I learned I can switch between apps and…
In SMS I can select an entire text when I tap twice a word, then choose the 3 vertical dots (does this icon have a name?) where the option:
Cut Copy Share and “Select all” are visible
In “Keep n…” I can “Delete”, “Make a copy”, “Send”, “Collaborator” (what’s in a name?!??) “Labels” and “Help & feedback”… THUS NO PASTE option!!!
So how to copy text from one app to another (especially in those 3: Notes (= “Keep n…”), SMS and WhatsApp) in all 6 possibilities.
Thanks for any help.
I am replying here as this is the topic about writing messages while the other one mostly focused on eSIM and network
as I mentioned, the longer tap should give you the PASTE option at least in some apps but you need to copy something first. It works for me in messages, while in Notes (Keep notes) it displays the copied text in the keyboard. I believe you need to play with it for a while.
Let me also re-share a bit of advice I mentioned earlier, usually when I have a puzzle, I google a bit cause most often there are very useful clips or tutorials showing step by step how to do stuff
Dear Yvonne,
I’m a very emotional person (probably far too emotional for most computers (and/or Fairphone?) scientists.
When I use capitals it is to stress that word. And to be sure that word will be seen as clearly the most important word.
I can’t use colors, nor styles (although I know the *, and ** option) and capital seems the most easy and clear to me.
If you read well, and know what i just wrote, how can it be interpreted als yelling (or disturbing)? I don’t curse or something vulgar do I, so why do capital letters seem so harsh to you?
I know another person on another side feeling the same. ANd I can during a shot i’m like here, restrain from using capitals but it doesn’t look like me, it is not me, it is dry (maybe cool; for some, but not alive. It feels — sometimes — “dead” to me) and I miss the intonation. I get crazy when I hear people speak without intonation, monotonous.
So how can we find a proper middle way, which suits both of us?
Dear @Sono
it is a reasonably well known common rule that using capital letters is associated with yelling.
We have only pointed that out.
I have no intention of limiting your way of expression, as I mentioned I am not an admin here, but I feel it might be something to consider.
@Meaghan: Wow, I’m soooo happy, and I’m forcing not to write this in capitals, as capital for me are also to express my joy. In fact, thanks to you, I become aware that I use capitals each time I’m very emotional [and this FP changes (a bit) my life day after day]. So it can be anger as well as frustration or utter disagreement or being upset or (and this I use very ofter, to stress what notion (in the conversaion, in the subject I’m writing about) is essential for me, and, of course, joy!
So when i tap twice, Ican often see a menu appear (or 3 dots) with the option to “Select all” and afterwards (this time often with 3 dots) “Copy”. Now, again thanks to you, after switching app, I got the Paste option!
Great, I’m saved! (at least till next question about “how transferring photos or mini video clips from WhatsApp to my desktop computer and vice-versa", but this is for later).
@Meaghan: INCREDIBLE:
- In Notes: first I got a magnifying glass (when tapping and holding down a long time) then… and then (=3rd time) the whole text was selected with the 3 dots allowing me 3 choices: CUT COPY & SHARE !!! Better still: when I clicked outside the text it became 4 choices with the last one = “Select All”
- So this one is almost solved as in SMS I got the same.
BUT… the PASTE option which is still missing. In SMS I got when clicking the 3 dots: only 1 toggle between: Auto-fill & Select all. When I choose Select all I have:
Cut Copy & Share + again 3 dots where I can choose: “READ ALOUD”(!!!)… but still no PSTE option (snif).
The read aloud is also funny, because i was writing a FRENCH SMS and it (she) spoke it as a British person. Very funny.
Hold Your Finger for some seconds in the text space of the Message-App where You want to paste the text and You will become the option “Paste”
Is it possible, that you only tap “Select all” but not “Copy” afterwards? You have to actively copy the selected text to paste it elsewhere. (You can change your selection by moving the small “handle dots” at the beginning and end of the marked passage with your finger.)
Regarding your question about how to correct spoken texts: you don’t have to delete your messages from the end via the arrow - you can just put the cursor anywhere by tapping into the text with your finger. Your can also move the cursor via the “handle for” or by swiping your finger over the space bar.
And to answer your WhatsApp-question: I’d recommend to open web.whatsapp.com in your browser and connect it to WhatsApp in your phone to copy anything from you WhatsApp threads to your PC. (In WhatsApp on your phone select the three dots and “Linked devices” for instructions.)
