How to (re)start the migration process

Hi,

I just received my second FP6 with Murena (I had the wrong color delivered, so I had to redo that).

Unlike the first one, where I did see the migration process coming up, on the second, after the WiFi setup I did not see the migration process starting. All videos and help pages simply describe the already running process, but not, how to start (or restart) it in the first place.

I have a Fairphone 2 with Fairphone Open OS (FPOOS), from which I want to migrate as much as possible. I also have a cable USB C to Micro-B ready.

Unfortunately, I asked support before the purchase about the migration from FPOOS, but after two weeks did not get an answer, so I wanted to use the standard process.

Thanks alot

Yours

hman

Additional remark: It’s a brand new FP6 directly from Fairphone, with Murena preinstalled (both of them). The rest of the installation seems to be complete, I have 5G, WiFi, I can unlock the display, I can install apps, take photos…

Mhm, the installation process I think has not completely been run through: I miss the second camera app! And I do not recall that I have seen the step where they ask for camera, and: I have a stability issue (serious) with the Citymapper app.

Whenever text shall be entered (origin and destination entries) the keyboard overlay pops up, but immediately (!) vanishes, so text entry is impossible. Also, when the app has found a route (it is a navigator for public transport), sometimes when I tap on it, the entire app minimizes. I have run Citymapper on the first FP6 with the wrong color, and there were no problems at all. Also, no other app with need for the Android keyboard has problems, including mail. So it is not a (visible) problem of Android keyboard, but something in my new FP6 isn’t the way it is supposed to be, so I believe I have to make a factory reset and redo from scratch… :frowning:

Deleting an re-installing Citymapper didn’t fix the problem.

Could a “factory reset” do the trick? I have backups of the files I produced since I set it up. How would one do a factory reset?

Ok, found out that switching on the 2nd camera is an option inside the global “apps” section of Setup. But I still need to run migration and to clear the problems with Citymapper.

Hey! There’s many ways but here’s two I would try. Bear in mind I don’t have /e/OS installed on my FP6 so some of these steps might look different.

Easy - From System Settings:

  1. On your phone, access Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).
  2. Confirm.
  3. Your phone will reboot into the first time setup flow.

Medium - From Recovery menu via Fastboot:

  1. Get a USB-C cable and plug it to your computer.

  2. Power off your phone completely.

  3. While holding down the Volume Down key, plug in the USB-C to your phone.

  4. Your phone should boot into fastboot mode. It looks like this:

  5. Use the Volume Up/Down keys to select Recovery mode. Press the Power key.

  6. In theory this should take you to the e-Recovery menu. It looks like this:

  7. From here, select Factory reset > Format data/Factory reset.

  8. Once done, select Reboot system now. It should reboot into the first time setup flow.

Another thing comes to mind. During the first time setup, stock Android asks if you want to transfer data from an old device to your new one:

Is this what you mean by migration? I’m not sure /e/OS offers this possibility based on some of the videos I’ve watched, e.g.: https://youtu.be/FikqN4NE8Kg?t=86

Maybe someone else can pitch in.

Is that secure? That it really runs through every step once again (and not simply erases everything)?

And yes, the above dialogue could be the one, if it asks for a cable connection etc. for transferring stuff.

So I remembered I have an old phone where I installed an unofficial build of /e/OS. I tested both methods and the result was identical, I got the first time setup flow with the following steps:

  1. Welcome to /e/OS
  2. Language
  3. SIM card
  4. Internet
  5. Date & time
  6. Set up Parental Control
  7. Location services
  8. Navigation
  9. Set up Find my Device
  10. Fingerprint setup
  11. Protect your phone (PIN, pattern or password)
  12. Sync your cloud account

As you can see it didn’t offer me an option to transfer data from another device using a cable. It could be something with my build of /e/OS though. Unfortunately I don’t have a device to test the latest version, sorry I can’t be of more help.

I have just tried the reset option. It did erase everything, and did everything you listed. But also: NO migration dialogue! But I did not make that up. I’ve seen it. Once. Only once, and I need to redo it!

btw., this is Murena 3.4 by now. The migration process is described here, for standard Android, but Murena showed me the same dialogues

Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CisekVETaak Starting at 03:48.

And AGAIN they do not mention how to start the process, it just happens. Now it won’t :frowning: Fairphone, didn’t you think that a second start could be needed, eg. because of a low battery, a SIM not properly inserted, or seaching for the WiFi password, so the process needs to be re-startable?

The steps mentioned in the video for reading are here: Der Switch zu Fairphone ist ganz einfach And once again, they simply say “Switch on your new Fiarphone and tap Start”, grrrr…

Hello
it is a bit confusing that you are linking guides and videos on standard FPOS but you are talking about e/OS, could you please clarify?

Edited to say it might be best to ask Murena support for help.

Murena has just the same process implemented, there are just no videos covering them, but they look practically identical. Asking Murena for help isn’t easy, their support system allows only for one inquiry per day :frowning:

They have a forum as well.

Yes, but with some very strange time restrictions. Yesterday I posted something, and hours later I wanted to post another, only to see an error message that should wait a couple of hours..?! After that, I should wait 51 minutes, then 41. That was this morning. I went to work (8+ hours) and upon reposting simply got “An error occurred: We appreciate your enthusiasm! That said, for the safety of our community, you’ve reached the maximum number of topics a new user can create on their first day. Please wait 34 minutes and you’ll be able to create more new topics.”.

Argh. This is going in circles. Murena support told me (by e-mail) to contact Fairphone… Meanwhile I still have two FP6 here (first one had the wrong colour, but the generous Fairphone support allows the have both, but of course only for a short time. So the clock is ticking…).

So I opened another support ticket. In the the process they offered me a support text that says: Do a factory reset, and once you are asked for the preferred connection (cable, WiFi etc)…

But that never happens! I did the factory reset three times, and every time I simply end up on a fresh Murena desktop, but I never get asked for my preferred connection! This migration part of the setup seemingly only starts if the FP6 is really brand new, but never again! Frustrating…

I have hard times to follow-all your post and to avoid misunderstandung, you are missing the set/up steps?

Yes this should always be there after a factory reset.

You are saying you have 2 FPs and on both you dont see this set-up process?

I actually doubt there is a cable migration option, however do you ask that question in thr e/OS forum?

For a migration of data from a prev phone, you have to check the e/OS documentation not FPs.

That sounds ridiculous to me, thats not a hardware issue in my eyes.
