"Hey Google" doesn't work when the screen is off and the phone is locked

I have a brand new Fairphone 6+ that works perfectly, but there is one small issue, I can’t tell if it’s a software feature or a bug.
When the phone is in standby mode with the screen off, the “Hey Google” voice command to activate the Assistant doesn’t work; however, if I unlock the phone (even with a Bluetooth headset connected), the Assistant activates successfully.
Even with the headset connected, the Assistant doesn’t respond when the phone screen is off.
I was wondering if this is normal behavior and, if so, how I might fix it. I should mention that I’ve already checked the lock screen and Assistant settings, but haven’t been able to resolve the issue.

Um… all these settings have already been checked multiple times, but the problem persists :-\

Furthermore, the guide you pointed me to is not consistent with the current version of Google Home, as there is no section covering the most frequently used settings, nor any regarding the lock screen.

Hi, sadly it is impossible to have this feature on the fairphone 6. I copy pasted the answer I got from the support in this post:

Gemini: no voice command when the screen is off

Edit: I must add that I’m disappointed that we can’t have this feature that we take for granted on other smartphones.

Maybe someone at Fairphone will listen us?

Maybe, but they are not listening in the user forum. contactsupport if you want to reach them

Writing to that address is a complete waste of time, as you simply receive an automated reply, proof that it is highly unlikely your request will ever be considered by anyone other than the usual AI chatbot.

have followed Fairphone on social media for a long time because I am very interested in a device built to last, but I have always had reservations due to the many negative reviews regarding the quality of their technical support.

Given all this, I hope I never have to use it. A brand’s quality is also reflected in how it supports its customers.

Why does the HomeAssistant voice assistant do work then? Atleast on /e/OS.

(In this case i use “hey Jarvis” when locked and screen is off)

In LineageOS Google’s voice assistant normally works with locked phone, but in a Fairphone you must before activate the screen to have “Hey Google” working.

And there’s no options in Settings.

Well, apparently no solutions for this issue.

Wonderful… :man_facepalming:t2:

I’ve seen this reported by other Fairphone users too. It seems the screen-off “Hey Google” activation is limited on the FP6, even with Voice Match enabled. Hopefully Fairphone or Google can address it in a future update.

Google operates on a biblical timescale; it is more likely that all the world’s wars will end today than that Google will act quickly to resolve this issue.

Fairphone, too, could make a slight effort to show they are aware of the situation and state what they intend to do to fix it.

No fix for the issue where Google Assistant doesn’t activate when the screen is off and the phone is locked?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a fix for this. The FP6 has a hardware limitation with its microphone, so it can’t keep listening for “Hey Google” while the screen is off and the phone is in deep sleep. Fairphone has confirmed this so it isn’t really something an update can fix.

Wow, this is really great news. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

And pray tell, why is there this hardware limitation, considering that phones from other brands don’t have this problem?

So, if I decided to install LineageOS, the problem wouldn’t be solved?

Unfortunately, LineageOS wouldn’t solve it either. This isn’t an stock ROM limitation rather a hardware limitation due to the fact that the FP6 uses an analog microphone (AMIC) rather than the low-power digital microphone (DMIC) needed to keep voice capture active during deep sleep. So the limitation is at the hardware level and changing ROMs won’t change anything.

Why was an analog microphone chosen instead of a digital one when this phone was designed? It’s a nonsense…

No fix for the issue where Google Assistant doesn’t activate when the screen is off and the phone is locked?
