I recently purchased an unlocked fairphone 6. I’m really excited about the premise of the company and am trying to de Google. After switching the sim from my Google pixel I was immediately able to call and text, and with some customer support from consumer cellular, I have been able to get 4g mobile data working, although the phone always shows an exclamation point by the triangle representing mobile data.
However, I cannot get any mapping apps to work while on data without having saved the maps. This is incredibly frustrating, and so far neither the ebay seller I bought the phone from nor consumer cellular has been able to solve the issue. I live in the US. I wonder if anyone else has had or solved this issue?
I really like the idea of the phone despite lesser volume on speaker phone, lesser photo quality, etc, but I travel a lot for work and this may be a non negotiable glitch that makes me go back to my Google pixel… I’ve bought pixels and motorolas previously unlocked and have never encountered this issue.
I bought unlocked device, and am using at&t through consumer cellular. Changing the APN settings with the help of their customer support is how i was able to get mobile internet to work at all. I’m not sure how to fix things with the network like you mentioned? I’m admittedly not a very techy person. Very open to suggestions!
Ultimately, it is probably ok if i only have 4g so long as everything works. I think what I’m going to try as a workaround for the maps issue is to get onx offroad, which allows for address input and step by step driving directions. My onx hunt is the only app that has been able to show me my live location with this phone, so I’m optimistic.
I’ve read that many folks have issues receiving group messages via sms on fairphone, so that might be my next hurdle to try and solve.
If Consumer Cellular guided you through the right steps, you should see “ereseller” as your APN. Make sure no other APN is selected (Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Click on the SIM
In that settings, make sure “Mobile data” is on, 4G calling (if available, could also be called VoLTE) and WiFi Calling are on. Scroll down to Access Point Names You should see the APN with “ereseller”. That should be the only one that is active (represented by the dot next to it being “fillled”, The ! point next to the network bars means your data is not 100% working, Turn off WiFi and power cycle (turn off and back on) the phone.
I’ve gone through all of these things as instructed (thanks for your help) but I am still getting that exclamation mark and 4g glitch. In good news though, today i downloaded a map app called graphhopper maps and it seems to work on mobile data, which is better than nothing. I think the issue could be related to consumer cellular only being “partially supported” even though they run at&t?
I’m currently trying to figure out the best texting apps that allow for long form voice messaging (I found one, but it won’t send much more than a minute.) Also I am not getting notifications for new text messages, emails, etc at the top of my screen, despite having tried to solve that issue in settings. I may try a different home screen app to show notifications? There are a lot of growing pains with divorcing google, that’s for sure. If anyone has a good AI free replacement for google docs, I would love to hear.
I’m running on murena. I haven’t paid for it, and i do have some google apps like docs that i haven’t found workarounds for. I didn’t have a strong preference for one system or another, but i needed an unlocked phone and this is what i found.
Hi. Yes, i have geolocaton and fake ip turned off and i tried specifically not “blocking app trackers and ads” for maps apps. No luck. But graphhopper did function for me today when i had to run am errand to a new place without wifi, so I’m really grateful to at least have found that.
