FP7 Future Fairphone tech

How about a smaller version? (additional version)

Why? A lot of people -those with smaller hands - want smaller phones than the current trend of big phones.

In average women have smaller hands than men. The current phones in the market are designed for men, not for women. )

Please design phones for all people, not only for those with big hands (which is: men)!

My gf brought this topic to me. I tried helping her find a new phone. It was a very difficult search. And no, the current Fairphone didn’t meet her requirements. It is too big.

I don’t think that is the case. The straightforward explanation for the lack of compact phones is low demand. Apple discontinued the 5.4″ iPhone mini rather fast, simply because it wasn’t selling. Deviating from mainstream trends and standards would be suicidal for FP. Sustainability and the option of a privacy‑focused OS are strong USPs on their own. Rather than investing in additional models like an FP7 mini, Fairphone should focus on improving quality, reliability, and customer service.

Why do you need to use USB-C and 3.5mm at the same time?

The answer to that question is the answer why people would like two USB-C ports. And the answer to the question why one isn’t suffice, is the same one as to why a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter is a viable option.

USB-C is simply more useful than 3.5mm. So it stands to reason the question is: do you want an extra 3.5mm or an extra USB-C port or neither. To which my answer would be: USB-C.

I, too, hopefully demand an e-Paper screen as a changeable display module. thank you for your possible action!

Something I’d personally want for future fairphones is to have the option to use a fully featured linux distro instead of Android and quite early on in their life cycle (using say, postmarketOS) (don’t expect this to happen for though unless Google annoys a lot of people…)

I don’t like using dongles. And yes, I have tried many of them with my FP4. My opinion hasn’t changed.

They are less reliable, especially as the connector wears out. Especially if the DAC is inside the 3.5mm port rather than inside the USB-C connector, which most of them are. If the digital connection cuts out even briefly, it can cause problems. In some cases the DAC disconnects and reconnects, and apps pause the audio. In some cases the DAC has a hard time reconnecting, sometimes the software doesn’t know how to handle things, and sometimes you even have to reboot the phone to fix the problem.

Probably the most reliable one I’ve tried is the JCally JM6 Pro, because the DAC is in the USB-C connector rather than the 3.5mm connector. It helps, but it would simply be better to avoid all of that.

If the 3.5mm jack is inside the phone and it’s just analogue from there, even if there is a loose connection, it doesn’t cause as many problems.

1 TB of internal storage is required, as many apps do not work on the micro-SD card slot.

I was speaking about what I thought the average person would require.

I certainly wouldn’t say no to 1TB of internal storage if the option was there. But these things cost money, and the phone has to be priced at a level enough people can afford.

So, it really depends on how much FairPhone can source the memory chips for.

There is another thing they can do - add support for MicroSD Express.

In fact, I have a 1TB MicroSD express card in my phone now. The slot doesn’t support MicroSD express though, so it’s not as fast as it could be.

One possible idea I have in regards to a headphone jack is to have the headphone jack and the DAC as a removable module inside the phone, so that it would even be possible to buy an upgraded DAC for it, but the phone could come with a lower cost one by default.

I mean in an ideal world nothing should “need” to be repaired, but we don’t live in an ideal world. Sometimes things break. Sometimes people drop their phones, or cause all sorts of accidents. And when they do, it’s nice when they’re designed to be repairable. And that is better than throwing the entire phone away and buying a new one.

Hello, I think that is the idea. Some ppl are looking for smartphones with limited capability to prevent excessive consumption and doom-scrolling and/or binge-watching social media. E-ink makes textual and “slow-” content, like reading maps, available, but cuts off films, movies, and videos.

Well, that would be its own category of product separate from what a FairPhone 7 would be.

For most people the frame did not crack nor did the volume buttons fall out,

but i have to say that switching from an aluminium frame to plastic made the phone feel way more fragile.

i have a video of throwing the fairphone 5 off 3 floor high of a water slide tower (don’t question it) and it is still completly intact other than a small dent on the frame in on of the corners.

I would never dare to try the same with the fairphone 6

I would not think that the plastic frame is not durable, FP2 and FP3 survived accidents like cars driving over…

Two physical SIM slots, that would be fine, since lots of “dual SIM” phones don’t have two physical slots anymore.

Maybe two fully functional hybrid slots, so that people can decide, if they use it for 2 SIM, 1 SIM and 1 SDcard or 2 SDcards.

I don’t mind whether it has two physical sims or one physical + one esim, but I don’t want to sacrifice having a microsd slot for it.

I think it would be nice if next iteration of fairphone would be modular in a way that we could actually upgrade the main board containing GPU/CPU combo.

The software support is also a great deal to me as in the past my phones lacked it after couple of years, hence needing upgrade.

I think as a company Fairphone is doing the right thing to try to innovate and keep platform open as much as they can.

Unfortunately like with any smaller companies the impact that they make is not huge. We live in throw away society not the sustainable one. So unless there will be proper laws reinforcing the longevity of technology products we will see new hardware constantly and forget about it as soon as new ones arrive.

Yes, exactly—the microSD slot absolutely must be kept, and it also needs to have a large 1TB internal storage capacity.
That way, you’ll be set for the longer future.

The extra cost of the internal storage will pay for itself over the years.
