I’ve seen a lot of discussion on wireless charging & been glad of the Fairphone response not to integrate it - it seems like a gimmicky inefficient feature: your wireless charging station still needs a wire to power it & they use/waste more power than normal charging. They also take up so much space in the phone & I can’t help thinking the heat must hurt longevity.
It got me thinking about what other cutting edge tech I would & wouldn’t like to see in the Fairphone 7 / 8 / etc.
Foldable screens are another that seems to really impact the longevity & build-reliability of the phone that I’d rather be without.
The main one I’ve seen recently that I’d love to have in my Fairphone someday is a periscope zoom camera. This seems both functional & also a really cool innovation.
Anyone have any other “never want” or “looking forward to” tech from the cutting edge?
Fake security and ai features like Samsung Knox that only hinders rooting or Google “local ai” image editing that only works with internet would be horrible.
One place where I think wireless charging has a use is for example on buses and other public transport locations. They often provide USB ports for charging, however they can be damaged often. Wireless charging is likely to have less maintenance. If only there was a standard magsafe style connector.
If also like to see AR features so that I can use my camera for measurements.
And the antenna for this would be connected via Bluetooth then? We already won’t be getting back the headphone jack, so in my opinion there’s no hope for an FM/DAB+ radio.
I have seen such a SDR receiver before. I wouldn’t really use it. If it is integrated into the phone I would use it while waiting for something. But I wouldn’t take an extra USB module with me, especially not with such an antenna.
I’ve decided that if their next phone doesn’t have a headphone jack, I’m not buying it.
It’s literally the only thing I’m asking for. I don’t even care if the CPU isn’t faster, or the screen isn’t higher resolution, or the camera is a potato.
I just want a repairable phone… with a headphone jack. That’s it.
I’ll take basically any CPU as long as it’s got more than just A53/A55 cores, and FHD+ resolution is fine.
I, for one, would welcome the foldable screen to have smaller factor and ability to set it on a table in the L shape and make photos on timer. That said I have FP5 and I have made a personal challenge to keep it for 10 years. So I think there is plenty of time to come up with good durable solution for foldables (and bringing the prices down)
Other feature I would welcome is full fledged desktop mode (I have yet to see it work well on any device)
And one more thing (maybe a bit contrary to the first one) to have second screen an e-ink. Maybe in 10 years someone manages to come with fully transparent displays and the e-ink could be under it
On that note, I would like to see a fair e-ink sustainable tablet with long software support, and good protection against shattering the screen and a replaceable display
hoping I will not shatter any more screens soon, I could easily wait a few years
Not exactly for a fairphone but I would like to see a Fairbuds (xl) revision that supports newer codecs like aptx low latency (supported on a lot of devices, but discontinued), aptx adaptive (most newer Android phones, including fairphones) and/or lc3 (low energy consumption and latency but lacking support)
Latency is kind of a bigger annoyance with their current Fairbuds and support for newer codecs could improve on that.
I am a new user of the FairPhone 5, and I think it is a really cool device. I don’t use the stock android version that came with it, and instead use Lineage OS.
Since this phone is a modular phone, why doesn’t Fairphone create better tech modules for the Fairphone 5 such as a bigger battery, Better Amoled Screen, better camera (front and back). Since FP already has modules to sell as replacement parts, they can just create new versions of the modules, and let us all enjoy new tech without having to update the whole phone, saving costs for both the user and the manufacturer.
I don’t really care if wireless charging is inefficient, I have several charging pads that are integrated into my furniture/car and I am not buying several separate cables when I have charging pads already everywhere. Also I am on 100% green energy, so what do I care if it is not top-tier efficient? Hell, if you turn on your stove for 10 seconds you are already using way more energy that charging your phone “inefficiently”…
Not integrating wireless charging because of efficiency concerns is a joke.
Yeah that makes sense, but a better AMOLED screen or bigger battery would only make the phone better and the SoC and the software have nothing to do with said upgrades. A screen, as far as I know is only connected with a rivet cable, so it’s most likely an easy upgrade.
