FP6: Vol Up button stuck - how to backup?

Hey dear Fairphone Community,

my Volume-buttons on the Fairphone 6 suddenly started to behave odd. As a first fix I rebooted leading to a boot to recovery (/e/os/ RECOVERY 4.3). There I only can use the “Volume -” Button to navigate, “Volume +” is not accepted. It appears that the Vol+ button is stuck somehow and therefore seems to be permanently pressed.

However, from the users HW perspective the button seems fine and also has a haptic feedback as if it is registered every time i press the button.

I’m able to enter FastbootD mode. But I think there is no way to backup or simply boot the normal Android from this point? (Please prove me wrong?! )

From the Recovery mode I can also select to boot to the bootloader by “Advanced Options” → “Reboot to Bootloader”. There on Top it cycles the options “Start”, “Power Off”, “Recovery Mode”, and “Restart Bootloader” fast. When pressing the “Volume -” along the stuck “Volume +” it stops the cycling. But the Power Button press to then select an option is never accepted. (Also not while not holding the “Volume -” to stop it and try by chance.)

If there is no “software” way to continue to boot with the stuck button I have another question:
If I prefer to backup before sending the product for a (warranty?) repair - is there a way to unplug the volume buttons.
This guide Fairphone 6 Lautstärkeregler austauschen/neu einsetzen - iFixit Reparaturanleitung shows the tear-down. Can I just unplug the ribbon cable (4) shown in Step 8 and the pressed button won’t be registered anymore? Would this void warranty?

Thanks for any help! Best regards.

Works on the FP6 as well

Hey @yvmuell ,

thanks for suggesting this! I tried to start the deice with the power cord trick, but the issue remains, that the fairphone registers the “Volume +” as pressed when booting up, so it will go the recovery screen instead of continue to boot to Android unfortunately. The Power-Button, however, seems to be working fine in general.

Yes when something breaks because of this.

And yes, when you cant boot into System there is no way to back up

And if i send it in for warranty repair - all data will be deleted, right? What a cursed situation. :frowning: As the device is in general working and only a minor HW bug is the cause fore this trouble.

Will removing the cord set the button to the “not pressed” state, or is it somehow inversed logic?

Probably a stupid idea, but have you tried pressing the "Volume - " button from the very start of the boot process? Perhaps it will override the what the boot process selects.
