FP6 + permanent magnetic USB-C tip = port permanently disabled

Hi all,

I’ve been using a magnetic USB-C adapter on my FP6 — the kind where a small metal tip stays permanently in the port, and the cable snaps on magnetically. I use it mainly for charging on my motorcycle and bicycle handlebar mounts, where plugging/unplugging with gloves is much easier with a magnetic connector.

The problem: the FP6 detects the metal tip as debris or a foreign object and disables the USB port. The notification appears within minutes of the tip being inserted.

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Rebooting with the tip already inserted (before and after the OS loads)
  • Clearing the Android System cache

Neither worked. The port gets disabled every time.

I understand this is a firmware-level moisture/debris detection feature, not a hardware fault. The tip is clean and dry — it’s just triggering the sensor due to its metallic contact with the port pins.

My question: Has anyone found a reliable workaround for this specific use case on FP6 (or FP5)? Ideally without rooting.

This seems like a legitimate use case that could be addressed with a simple option in developer settings to disable the detection. Would be worth flagging to the Fairphone team if others are hitting this too.

people have been using or even recommending magnetic cables here for a while and I do not recall similar issues being reported.

May I ask what brand you have been using?
Unfortunately the debris detection is allegedly triggered by some (non-compatible perhaps) cables.

I use Netdot magnetic cables in my Fairhpone 1, 4 and 5 and my partner in a Fairphone 3.
One time I had the debris warning in my Fairphone 5. I just waited a day and then the warning was away.
And didn’t show again. (Knock on wood ;))

I have been using one of these on a galaxy S5 for years without issues. However I did not want to take any chance with my FP6 after reading this:

It’s always good to have information to make informed decisions, whichever way.

(I’'ll stay in the magnetic adapter camp, though, for now.)

I also use the Net Dot 10 cables and on the FP6 I also see often this message however within a few minutes it vanishes and it happens (also) when the cable is not connected.

I dont see it with this cable on the FP5 however could reliably see it when connecting the FP5 to a docking station, so it can be related to the cable you use. I havent seen any reports that someone got rid of it with rooting and I doubt FP will ever give us easy options to tun that off as its a security feature

I would like too but I’m a bit scared now. I’ve never had any issue with my Ugreen magnetic cable. I mostly used it on my S5 and other micro usb devices. I’d love using it on the FP6 for (slow) charging but wonder why such warnings are issued. It seems Reddit shows numerous horror stories about those magnetic adapters too. Would love to know what is Fairphone’s position on these. Do they advise against using those magnetic adapters?

As I side note, I did test the magnetic usb-c tip from ugreen on the FP6 and it seems to work flawlessly. I did not see any warning regarding dirty port.

I think those horror stories are as old as magnetic cables.

Maybe it was not clear: I don’t have the issue when the cable is connected.
My main problem is the number of notifications triggered by the debris detection — about 30 per day
