FP6: high batteryconsumption

Since I got my Phairphone 6 the battery is draining faster than expected. This has been going on since september, but this week the battery was functioning normally for a couple of days without me doing something different.

Most of the time my battery won’t last for more than a day, even when I don’t use it that much. It is especially weird that it drains 20-40% each night while I don’t use my phone and it is in battery saving mode. Looking at the battery use I think there is a problem with the mobile network/mobile data, because it uses A LOT of battery even when I turned the mobile data off.

What I’ve done so far:

  • Bluetooth and mobile data are turned off when I don’t use them.
  • I use the battery saving mode at night.
  • I close my apps when I don’t use them.
  • Nightmodus is activated by regulated hours.
  • Battery manager is on
  • Charging controle is on
  • Fairphone is updated
  • Apps are updated
  • I checked the quality of the battery, there seems to be nothing wrong there

More info:

  • I use e/os Murena

  • Battery is charging normally

  • I suspect the problem is in the mobile data, but I have no clue how to fix it

Screenshot below from a timeframe at night when mobile data was turned off.

Hi!
do you have 5g enabled? That is a big drainer usually. Also if signal is not strong it can make it increase the power, or that I’ve noticed some weeks ago.

For me doing one charge to 100% increases the lifetime as it recalibrated.

You may also try to disable auto select network in our SIM parameters. In e/OS some people also reported that ntfy was draining battery. You can freeze apps you don’t use with e.g hail app. Check the e/os forum for more tips.

Same here.

It doesn’t matter which ROM I’m using. Stock OS, iode OS, eOS. All with the same behavior during night time. All apps are <1% usage. Therefore I’m really confident it’s not because of a certain app. Mobile Network is at around 95-99% of system usage.

I’ll try disabling the auto select network and see if it changes anything.

Please try to disable 5G.
The setting is called Preferred network type.

Today I set up the preferred network to 4G and turned “automatically select network” off. The battery drained less then in a normal day, but still the mobile network used 86% of the battery since midnight. It is about 90% when the mobile network is turned on and about 50-60% when turned off.

For the apps, that seems normal. Apps are only using a lot of battery when I’m using them a lot.

Any more tips what to do?

I would address this rather in the e/OS forum I dont think this is hardware related.

Don’t know if it’s hardware related, but it’ definitely not ROM related. My FP6 shows the same behavior on Stock ROM, e/OS and iodeOS.

I disabled the autoselect network yesterday, but it seems there was no or minimal change.

Update 24h later: Disabling 5G did the trick. Battery consumption with double the usage of the day before only took 20% battery.

Still it’s a bit odd, that the 5G module is consuming this much energy. I have a Pixel 9 for reference and never experienced anything like this.

I have a FP6 with e os and 5G enabled: no problem. My partner the same.

I could one day on a battery load - a bit disappointing. Disabling 5G is a great tip, it seems to be working. Thanks forum!

Same problem here. FP6 with e/OS since august. I could go a whole week without charging the phone with 5G on. Last week I updated to the recent OS version and now my battery is drained after 4 days. I think this is indeed a problem with e/OS. Hope they solve it soon.

I tested a little bit more and at least in my case the issue appears to be the combination of 5G and the O2 Germany network.

5G with Telekom no issues. Couldn’t test Vodafone.

All on stock rom.

I’ve also noticed worse battery life on A16, attributed to mobile network in the battery manager.

I’ve also noticed 5G in more places, so maybe they’ve added new frequencies or changed the threshold to switch to 4G?
