FP5 to FP6 data migration doesn't work

I’m trying to move the data from a FP5 to a FP6. It starts the process but then the data transfer app on the FP5 closes. It’s not due to the USB cable either, it does exactly the same when try it with the wireless method.

Anyone seen this and got a fix?

Didn’t Fairphone test this out?

Ended up using a backup and restoring that.

They can test all they want, software is never ever 100% perfect these days.
Google offer a backup and restore via their cloud, too, and it doesn’t work reliably for everybody either.

Migrating my data from a Graphene OS phone worked fine and that’s a heavily modified Android. I do think it might be related to this memory bug everyone is going on about, the app using a lot of RAM and then just croaking it.

exactly, same here, FP5 pretty normal, pictures not in google cloud. starting with brand new FP6 and selecting language (us-english of course  and then going down the cable path first, the migration tool first manages to copy over the google account to the FP6 and very briefly shows the migration tool on the FP5 side again thereafter and then it seemingly vanishes or crashes or whatever, the FP5 leaving in a USB file transfer mode with the two arrows left right on the upper left side of the edge of the screen but nothing happens after this. On the FP6 side the collecting data and information about files etc circle animation on the bottom half of the screen stays working for hours and hours.

first I had thought I was having too many photos, although I am not a photo junkie, the FP5 256GB storage is half empty still, anyhow not going anywhere, eventually the one phone charging the other until one or the other or both battiers are empty, started with full batteries.

so then removing the USB-c cable and finishing the FP6 failed migration to a degraded FP6 state just to able to reset the whole phone.

next attempt, doing it the WiFi WLAN way, here, it manages to copy over the google account and briefly shows a selection table what you want to copy over or only showing that it would copy over call log, SMS and some tiny things only actually.

starting this process doesnt last long and it again stops and fails and eternally waits on the photos data stuff.

once you touch and click around on any of the involved phones, this whole process in the WiFi way, stops and can not be continued or resumed or anything at all, so one more reset on the FP6 side, just to try some more and again.

All leading nowhere. This brought back some buried memories that I always hated the android fails and ways of moving and migrating from one device to a nother or to a newer, this is such a poor “experience”, I can not understand that google and android as giant companies and platforms leave the user base in such a nightmare situations.

The very few times I had my hands on some apple systems, where like a dream regarding these essential and elemental situations.

what a shame of all of the involved companies. I was already thinking about skipping the FP6 step and returning this poor piece of product.

ended up restoring what exactly and in what ways?

I just restarted it like ten times (reconnected the cable) after the app on my old phone crashed and finally it worked
Didn’t have a FP5 though

I restored a backup from my Google account. Which is basically my list of apps, photos etc…

So, at least it can work at all. That’s something established.

So, a Fairphone 3 (according to profile)?
That would certainly have less memory available than a Fairphone 5.

Perhaps something helpful would be visible in a log?

No, actually it was a Shift 6mq

Ok, this would have 8 GB RAM.

I have got the same problem when trying to migrate data from my FP5 to my new FP6. Just won’t work, the app on FP5 always crashes after a few seconds.

report this to fairphone as a company, I have asked for a refund and return of this faulty genertion / FP6 purchased via the fp online store. i wonder how people actually use this stuff with such essential bugs. then again the FP6 would also not start the installation at all when not being set to english/intl language to begin with. lol. quality control of FP where have they been with the development of this generation of the product??

I am having the exact same issue when I try to migrate everything from my Fairphone 5 to the new Fairphone 6.

In my opinion, restoring from the backup is not the solution but a workaround at best. I doubt a backup from Google Drive is as complete as a direct migration. Topic starter, can you uncheck the solution so we can continue to search for a solution in this topic?

I have also contacted Freshdesk today so if they can tell me something about this, then I will send an update.

Well if its the solution for OP it can stay as it is and you can still try to find another solution for you

As Fairphone Support was unable to resolve this issue, I followed the thread starter’s recommendation and returned my FP6 for a refund. In my opinion, it is unacceptable for a basic feature like this not to work.

I agree, but do you think this is an issue on the Fairphone 5 or on the Fairphone 6?

Fairphone support initially advised to close all the open apps on the Fairphone 5, but that did not do the trick. (I also tried that already)

I asked to elaborate what the difference is between the backup restore function and the direct migration, and the relevant department replied the following:

“The biggest difference is that transfer via cable or WiFi is a straightforward process where it’s done for you. On the other hand, with Google Drive you can transfer the same files and data (you could even argue that it’s more complete), but it’s just a more manual process than the recommended transfer via cable or WiFi.

There’s a small chance you might forget something during the transfer, but that shouldn’t be a problem because it should still be on your Google Drive.

If you’d like, you can also try to back everything up manually on a 3rd device, do the cable/wifi transfer with Google and the 3rd device.”

With this in mind, I tried to restore a backup from the cloud and it actually restored more then I expected. The shortcuts in the stock launcher also where restored for instance. I still need to login to all the apps, but I have never tried a direct migration so I don’t know if that is any different.

It seems like a backup restore is a decent workaround after all. The issue is known so hopefully they will fix the direct migration in the future.
