FP5 not booting after update to Android 15

Why are there problems with every update on the fairphone 5. I’m not going to update. I was without a phone for 4 days after the 3.0 update…

Why are some Pixel Phones unusable after upgrades?

And this is for e/OS and not relevant at all here

Did not have any problem from 13 to 14, or every minor upgrade between 13 to 15.
Only have a problem with quickstep on 15 upgrade, but manageable installing another launcher.

Experiencing the same issues but rebooting many many times never fixes it so completely stuck without a working phone for almost a week now. No idea what to do but extremely frustrated that my expensive phone now is broken, not very sustainable or fair. Ive raised several tickets and not heard any thing from support??

I had the same problem. Stuck on screen with booting after update. I dont know if my fingerprint sensor is broken, never used it.
After pressing all buttons it startet vibrating all 3-6 seconds, nothing happend.
I disconected the battery multiple times, then it booted and showed a message the update was not sucsesfull.

While im typing this forum says “this topic is solved”? wtf?

What to do to the update properly? No update - no “solved topic”
Did i miss something?

Yes the topic is solved because the root cause is found and all information can be seen in the first post instead of being hidden somewhere.

As you dont know if your fingerprint reader is broken or not, you might be hit by a different issue.

Thank you for your work SarahFP and yvmuell.
Would be great, if a new firmware package can be flashed that fixes the boot problem.
Since I flashed it manually before, A14 is gone.

Hello from Germany. I’ve finally managed to do it after 20 reboots. My problem was that I waited too long. I only restarted as soon as the “I” was displayed.

Try this: Hold down the on/off switch until the screen goes black. As soon as the word “Fairphone” appears in green and the Android logo below it, hold down the on/off switch until the screen goes black again. You do this about 7-8 times. At some point I was suddenly back in.

Good luck!

Hello, sorry for the dumb question, but how exactly are we supposed to send our phone in for repair?
Send it where? Is the shipping on our charge? Shouldn’t we wait for the support to give us the proper instructions?

Thanks for your question!

Please follow this trouble shooting tool > Fairphone 5 > Fairphone 5 only: my device is stuck after Android 15 update
You will receive an automated email then our customer support team will reach out within a few days and will guide you and share the instructions and shipping label.

Please be mindful to follow the steps, reply accurately, and read all the provided text and questions carefully. We want to avoid incorrect responses, as they will slow down the resolution of each request, even for people affected by other issues. Thanks a lot

Try to get your phone to boot up on Android 14 if possible to make a back up personal data. Then open a ticket through the support page. That way they have all the relevant info in writing, and immediately fo a follow up by phone. They’ll quickly issue an in warranty return sticker. The whole process should cost nothing since it’s in warranty return. Once the package leaves your hand to be scan, you can expect fairphone to do everything in their power to repair it fast but they can’t compress shipment time so depending on where you are in Europe and which partner will handle the repair you should expect 3 to 6 days of travel and one day in the workshop… The repair itself is probably going to be done in half an hour but what takes time is logistics.
Whatever happens EU law says they have to provide a working equivalent within a month from the moment the package left your hands.
It’s not an great system but that is not a fairphone problem.
For repairing electronics there are probably a dozen of factories spread out through the continent that are capable of reliably subcontract in warranty service. They work for lots of different brands, I had the same type of problem with my Dell laptop 3 years ago, and they were way worse than fairphone. I also expect some local distributors (orange France at least) to condition their distribution to the choice of specific in warranty subcontractors.
To be honest, I think everybody’s in good faith in this chain (except some distributors) but all that is a consequence of deindustrialization of the continent. That system makes sense with Samsung or Google phones that are held together with industrialy applied glue, thus need high quality control on repairs, and in consequences small repair shop are sure to jeopardize the products ip rating. But with fairphones any local repair shop should be able to do 90% of in warranty repair in less than half an hour ( screen and USB replacement for people who have screwdriverophobia) provided they keep a small box of spare modules available. And for something like the sensor it would probably still require a shipment to a bigger location but having a local repair shopkeeper handling the logistics of it and maybe even lending a temporary substitute would provide a great relief for us.
The only company that is capable of offering such a service is apple with it’s stores… But they often abuse their position trying to sell you a replacement rather than a repair as soon as warranty wears out while the product you brought will be refurbished and sold again.
Anyway, fairphone has declared that they are working on improving support, and I believe they are but it’s a way more complicated task than what we think. Even companies that are worth a hundred times more are struggling on that subject. And a phone is such a complicated device that it’s not reasonable to expect them to do everything in house.

There is no phone to follow-up and It was already explained by FP how to proceed, so please just follow this official statement

Thank you so much, Sarah. I’ve opened my third ticket, following these instructions :face_with_peeking_eye:
Now I know this one is properly qualified and can be easily handled by your teams!
Have a great end of the week!

Same here, stuck in boot, restarted 30 times, does not boot in Android 14. Broken Fingerprint since a year as well. I have a support ticket open for three days, no answer and a bricked smartphone.

The dedicated one alteady?

Great to hear!
You too

Hi Sebastian,

I hope our customer support will be able to assist you shortly.

yes, the dedicated one as well!

Thank you, this worked for our FP5 as well. Waiting too long between restarts did nothing.

@yvmuell
Shouldn’t this thread have this post as an “answer” ?

Plus maybe @Sabbel post should be linked for people not to fail the “8 boot attempt” trick.

Official support should also precise this point I guess @anon76468197 , because lot people will wait the freezed “I” to reboot again.
