FP5 in bootloader undetected by Windows

Hi Fairphone Forum!

I recently tried installing /e/os on my FP5, and did so with the online easy installer.
The procedure has come to completion, however the phone is now stuck in FastBoot mode.

I know this is a common issue, and I’ve already got a few hints as to how to solve the issue by relaunching the install process manually; however, in the state of things, my PC doesn’t detect my plugged-in phone (in bootloader) anymore.

I’ve tried multiple computers, multiple cables, updating the relevant drivers manually and with Windows update, still nothing. So far, my understanding is:

  • either the phone’s process that is in charge of detecting USB connexions isn’t accessible or has been erased/corrupted in the process;
  • or Windows isn’t capable of detecting the FP5 in this state: I have yet to try it on Linux.

What insight do you have that I could have missed, and what do you recommend I try? I greatly appreciate your help.

Can you kindly precise what you actually did, as there is often misunderstanding what has to be updated.

Indeed: I installed all optional Windows updates, had adb and fastboot drivers installed. It didn’t work in this state, so I removed all installed drivers related to adb, fastboot, Fairphone and Android.

I reinstalled the adb and fastboot drivers (Add Drivers → selected the android_winusb.inf folder), but that didn’t make my device detectable.
I installed them differently during the easy install (device → Update driver → Browse for drivers → Let me pick → Show all devices → Have Disk → selected the android_winusb.inf file).

My computer doesn’t pick up my phone, so I don’t know how to reinstall the drivers specifying they’re for the device as I did before.
If I missed something let me know! Thanks

Hi Piero, thank you for this insight!
This does answer the problem of fixing the software, but not the first problem of getting my phone to be detected by Windows, unfortunately. Do you perhaps have an idea of what could be causing it?

the phone have to be in Fastboot mode when you do the windows update

.

what is the output for

fastboot devices

My phone is indeed plugged in Fastboot mode when I launch Windows Update, but nothing related to fastboot is changed or updated.

When I do :

fastboot devices

no device is found (looking for any device) whatever I do.

So you checked optional updates and nothing showed up related to bootloader? There is no auto update this is manual

also the USB cable (if USB-C ↔ USB-C), or the USB port (if HUB even internal) could be involved…

but one thing at a time… driver issue is the most probable cause !

Nothing showed up related to the bootloader as the computer doesn’t recognise the phone is plugged in, even as an unknown device (with a little warning :warning: sign).

I did see how, when they’re needed, you can tell Windows to install the latest bootloader drivers through the manual optional updates. However, it doesn’t seem they’re showing up for me.

I think so too

if device manager don’t see any difference when you plug or unplug the device (in fastboot mode), so it could indicate a physical connection problem…

is it a laptop or a desktop ?
can you boot Linux instead ? (no driver needed)
on a friend, neighbor, familly 's computer.
