FP5: Android 15 killing background apps more aggressively

Where is it possible to submit tickets?

And which other phone is best with multiple tabs and apps being open without being killed? I heard that Android 15 generally got worse in that

They were a lot quicker actually! Closed the second ticket as solved (already September 2nd, but I was too frustrated to get back here), with a generated reply saying they have too many requests right now.

The response from Fairphone

So they just close it (as solved!) without looking into it and refer me to the new troubeshooter. Where, if the issue does not exist as one of the options, I cannot find a way to open a ticket about something else.
At least they asked me about my experience with support afterwards, sent them a reply. Maybe someone will read it

Edit: I went through the troubleshooter portal, selected a random other issue, always selected “problem still exists”, selected to create a support ticket, new number: #1307944. But besides the topic I could not add any description to it

Edit 2: Also still waiting for the promised same-day reply from Nica, promised 6 days ago.

Edit 3 (11:06 CET): The ticket #1306308 is marked as “Open” again, Zendesk showing last activity “2h ago”. I’m pretty confident it was status “Solved” for the last 2 days, but don’t have proof of it, slight chance I was wrong. But the message clearly reads like closed, too. Maybe the 3rd ticket through troubleshooter made that possible?

Edit 4: (11:24): Now #1306308 is closed again

@anon76468197 would you urgently look into this and explain whats going on? Seems something half-baked went online? Either way why are tickets closed as solved without looking into it? The reports about this are increasing.

I reported to live chat that the troubleshooter does not allow to create a support ticket if one does not have one of the listed issues and therefore works like a gatekeeper, keeping new issue reports out. Was noted and promised to be forwarded. Friendly, helpful live chat once again, almost no waiting time.

They also updated my initial request about the apps getting killed (in a new, third ticket, no idea why). Now I need to run through all the diagnoses, I will give it a try.

Fairphone support reply, new ticket #1308021

Dear Jan,

[…]

Here is a summary of the issue you reported:

  • Apps like AntennaPod and Spotify randomly stop playing music or podcasts, even when the phone is not in active use.
  • The F-Droid app was killed in the background while updating, resulting in only one app being updated instead of all selected apps.
  • When playing YouTube videos in Firefox, the app is consistently killed in the background after a short time when you switch to another app.
  • This issue has become more frequent since updating to A15, and unlike with A14, rebooting your phone no longer temporarily resolves the problem.

First, I will need your help to test and diagnose the issue. Please follow the steps below and let me know the outcome.

Please feel free to ignore the steps that you already tried, and make sure to send me all of the relevant results.

Step 1: Update

Make sure to update to the latest software: Android OS v.054 (Build number FP5.VT2D.C.054 )

The release of some updates may be delayed by up to a few weeks. This depends on your country and phone carrier.

Step 2: Check for network connection issues

Is your network connection weak? If your phone is having trouble connecting with the network, then this is most likely causing the issue. Enable Airplane mode for a while and let me know if that helps.

If your network connection is good, then we need to check if your Fairphone 5’s antennas are working well. To test that:

  1. Go to SettingsNetwork and InternetSIMs (select the SIM you want to configure).
  2. Tap Preferred network type to switch between different network types (2G/3G/4G) and let me know which is most stable.
  3. If 4G Calling/VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling is turned on, try turning them off and let me know if it helps.

Step 3: Other connectivity issues

Faulty components may cause similar issues. Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC separately and test your Fairphone 5 like that for a while. If turning off one of those features solved the issue, please let me know which one it was and I’ll help you further.

Step 4: Safe mode

Reboot your Fairphone 5 in Safe mode and keep it like this for a while. If the issue is resolved, follow the instructions in the article to narrow down which 3rd party is causing it.

In Safe Mode, downloaded apps are temporarily disabled to help you identify the cause of an issue. In our article on Safe Mode, go through the steps and make sure to read the Important notes. You can easily exit Safe Mode by restarting the phone.

Step 5: Test with a different SIM/SD card

Try to test your phone with another SIM card or even without any SIM card. This will also help us know if antennas of your Fairphone 5 work well.

If you’re using a SD card, please test with a different one or without it. It’s possible that your SD card has become faulty is not fully compatible with your Fairphone 5. This test will tell us if that’s the case or not.

Step 6: Factory reset

If all else fails, Back up your data, if you have an SD card remove it, and then perform a Factory reset. While this step can take some time, it often helps and it’s worth to try it before we send the phone for repair. A Factory reset is mandatory when sending the phone for repair, so this might save your phone a trip to the repair center.

Important - Do not restore your data for a day or two after the Factory reset. When you are ready to restore your data, you will need to do a Factory reset again. This is because data can be restored only during the initial setup.

Let me know if the Factory reset resolved the issue.

Step 7: Additional information

  • Please provide the requested screenshot(s).
  • Have you noticed any pattern connected to the issues.
  • If the issue is resolved, please share what helped, as that can help us improve.

Got the same problem after upgrade to Android 15. Even did a full reset but with no change after all.

+1
used to be able to switch from games to chat/socials during loading … can’t anymore switching resets almost everytime (even with only 2 app in the background, when it was ok with 10 paused on A14)

I know that we are supposed to be able to keep these phones for 5+ years but in the past year of ownership I’ve had to spend a whole lot of time in these forums finding random stuff that starts being an issue with each release. Is it possible to have more QA or an opt-in/out for these untested updates.

Thank you very much for acknowledging the issue.

Some use cases simply can not be dealt with.

Like purchasing something, getting forwarded to the payment app, having to authenticate with another app… the purchasing app already closed.

After trying two or three times, it works (randomized or because I got quicker by repairing ating), but that is simply unbearable.

Every person that asks me about my Fairphone (believe it or not, your product is a big deal), I just have to answer… well… it is great… normally. But right now it is nearly useless, but therefore heavily frustrating. Getting to my launcher (nova or Microsoft launcher) also takes randomly 0 to about 10 seconds. That is sooo bad. People smile at me like I am a loveable idiot for having such a phone because of all the reasons asons but the “works as a smartphone” function…

I am sooooo looking forward, for this phone being usable like a charm again. Don’t make me regret buying this phone. :sob:

Just chiming in with my +1 here. Since the last update my FP5 is nearly unusable: switching between apps just doesn’t work, they’re killed immediately despite any settings.

Same here. Switching between apps is fully impossible right now. Furthermore, fairphone made a big step in the direction of being unusable with AutoLocation, neither geofences nor location detection work right now. I do have issues with logging into mobile network, too. Nicely done.

Or just simply playing music. Screen off and a few minutes later BlackPlayer EX gets killed. No music for sad user. :sob:

Also on a FP5, firefox, spotify, youtube get killed constantly even when still playing and having power optimization disabled.

And another annoying part is that basically any app that isn’t open for the last 20 seconds gets immediately killed.

Annoying: I’m playing a game and watch an add to get in-game stuff; I get a phone call, and after switch back to the game/ad – it reloads and it’s as if I hadn’t already watched the ad.

Really annoying: I’m filling in a really long form in Firefox and switch to my banking app to copy my IBAN. Switch back to the form and it reloads; all my entries are gone.

This should not happen, and more significantly, didn’t use to happen. It started after the update to Android 15. Let’s get some dev attention, alsjeblieft!

Another user with the same problem!

For me it’s logging into things that’s the biggest problem. Any time I have an app that has to send a code to my email, I have to use my laptop to get the code, since the act of switching to Gmail even for under 15 seconds is enough to kill the app and prompt to send a brand new code, invalidating the old one! The only solution is to have both apps open on split screen, but that’s unhelpful for those apps that don’t support it, and sometimes even switching from split screen to just one of the apps causes that to restart too!

@all this seems to be something Android (15) specific not only affecting Fairphone, so there is not much to be done by Fairphone in this case…So FP is aware and having an eye on it, however these are deep system-level changes that Google implemented in Android 15

This isn’t unique to Fairphones. Similar issues are being reported across the Android ecosystem, even on Google’s own devices (Pixel 9 Killing Apps in Background; Pixel killing background apps ).

Interesting. Is there any specific developer notes about the changes in A15 that Google documented in release notes that would cover this?

The first link seems to be to complaints about a general Pixel bug. (see https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/1f06j5a/comment/m05wjxp/ where someone says “it’s still the same on Android 15”, implying that the thread started when folks were on 14). And the second link gets me a “Page not found” page?

Guys, just out of curiosity (since I don’t have this issue on my FP5): do you have Battery Manager enabled? Settings > Battery & Charging > Battery Manager - I can’t imagine it is related to the issue, but I’m really curious why some of you are experiencing it, while the rest is not.

I, testwise, now deactivated it.

I will report back. (but if it was that easy, it propably would be spread knowledge and I did not stumble over it ba now, so…)
