My Fairphone 4 battery does not last even for a day, and it is not even one year since purchasing. I purchased the phone because of replaceable battery, but it seems like the 3900 mAh battery is insufficient and restrictive. Is there an option to get a higher mAh battery replacement? Quite disappointed. I have limited budget and have to save to buy stuffs and when it does not work as expected it pains a lot. Had to get another phone: Sony Xperia 10 VI, and it has very good battery life and cheaper than FP4. What is the point of user and environment friendly bla bla bla⦠when we canāt even use a bulky phone for a year properly. Seriously disappointed. And In Taiwan, the supplier donāt even have spare batteries for replacement. If they have extra batteries, then I could carry an extra battery with me.
Actually when I bought my FP4 (around January 2023), that battery lasted a day and a half with normal use (= about 1 hour of calls (5G) + another hour of other uses a day, WiFi and Bluetooth are usually off).
That was quite enough for me, I (slow-)charge it in the morning and it lasted me till the next morning, with enough margin to cover exceptional situations of heavier use.
Only when using it for car navigation over a longer distance I had to recharge it during the day.
.
The battery problems appeared later, right after some specific update, which means something broke the initially well-optimized battery saving system.
By now itās very inconstant: I have usually the same usage pattern every day. Since that update, the remaining charge of my battery in the morning can vary by up to 20%, for no reason at all, and it didnāt do that in the past, in the past variation was under 5%.
By āvariationā I mean that some days the remaining battery level is as expected, some other days something seems to have drained the battery, but it wasnāt meā¦
Note Iām taking in account the loss of battery capacity due to age (it now has about 15% less charge left after 24h). Besides that loss is static, always the same, it canāt explain the daily variations of battery consumption.
Thanks, @KurtF . I have also experienced drastic degradation in battery performance after update. Do we have any official announcement on how to get rid of this issue?
There arenāt any kind of official announcements about problems (Problems? What problems?), just the occasional marketing gushing. Fairphone has adopted the motto of the late queen Elizabeth II: āNever make excuses, never explainā ![]()
The standard suggestion of support would be (from what Iāve heard) to buy a new battery, but that doesnāt seem to help (from what Iāve heard), because apparently the problem is in the software.
If you read the forum here you will see all kind of suggestions, like turning off 5G, doing a factory reset, sacrificing a black rooster on midnight during full moon, but from what Iāve read all those suggestions donāt really help, not consistently or even at all. There was a hope that another OS update might accidentally fix this issue the same way it was initially created, but since the chances of getting an update for the FP4 are dwindling fast⦠![]()
Fairphone somehow invented unplanned obsolescence for the fp4
The reason IMHO is: The RMNET_DFC Kernel Wakelock is triggered >83k times within 24 hours. Far too many calls! That means it is called almost every second. Does that make any sense?
Any idea whatās calling it?
Well, since it is a kernel wake lock, I guess it is the kernel. IMO, the root cause is some driver configuration problem in the kernel and as someone stated here before it is related to the mobile network in some way. The FP support has already forwarded this to the devs and has let me know, that they might contact me directly in case there are questions.
It is only 1.5 years that this all startedā¦
Pretty crazy to think that they havenāt given a shirt about this issue since October of 2023. No call for beta testers for this specific issue, no call for people to do tests. I even reported this issue on the beta issue tracker and a year later thereās been no response at all, which is odd seeing as almost every other issue has one. This issue alone is whatās caused me to largely dump this phone. No way in hell am I using a phone that I need to charge every 4 hours. Itās insane.
Hey there,
after only reading for some time iād like to contribute to this topic.
I got my fairphone end of 2022 and in the beginning i was pretty happy. But i also had the battery drain after the android 13 update. Also i have an higher energy consumption when 5G turned on.
Since some months it got even worse and i have to charge my phone up to 3 times a dayā¦really horrible. Main consumption comes from the carrier app.
Fairphone told me to have a factory reset after the A13 update, but i havenāt done it yet. I thought i do it after the A14 update, but this takes sooo long
.
Iām really done with fairphone and will never buy it again. I really like the idea of keeping an phone for longer time, but not with these conditions.
What do you mean by ācarrier appā?
Iām asking because Iāve been running 5G on my FP4 since Iāve bought it, and I didnāt notice any increased battery drain, neither in France where I usually live, nor in other countries, like Germany for instance (I travel a lot). It doesnāt make any difference if I enable or disable it.
There must be something which makes your phone choke on 5G and not mine. ![]()
Sorry for my translation, I meant the consumer āmobile networkā.
