FP3 system apps crash when turning off airplane mode

Hello Forum, I hope I can still get some support with this old model.
Every time I turn off airplane mode (so my phone starts connecting to network and wifi) my phone gets very slow. I had this problem for a while so I reset my phone in december but the problem returned instantly after the reset.
The phone doesn’t only get slow, but most of the times some app gets unresponsive. This is most often a system app like system UI, but sometimes also a third party app (whatsapp or chromium based browser). I keep getting the alert that the app is unresponsive untill I choose to kill the app.
This is very annoying, since sometimes you just need your phone asap, but this is preventing me from using it quickly.

Do more people with FP(3) struggle with this issue?
Is there something I can do to further analyse the issue to find a solution? Is there a solution or should I upgrade to fp5 (kind of beats the purpose of buying an FP in the first place)?

Is the behaviour the same when you just enable Wi-Fi while still in airplane mode?

Is the behaviour the same when you remove the SIM card from the phone?

Good question.
I tried turning on wifi first this morning and for a few seconds I thought the phone was only a bit slow, but then System-UI stopped responding and had to be restarted.

i will try turning off flight mode with wifi turned off later today.

It seems to primarily happen when I turn on wifi.
Less so with data without wifi.

What’s next?

So I recently swapped batteries, because I had some trouble charging and the old one apparently had a bulge on it.
I had hoped some of my issues with the phone would go away with a new battery too, but I see no betterment in terms of sluggishness and also still some crashes when turning off airplane mode.

I am really wondering what I could do to get my phone running smoothly again. I am planning on using it for at least a year still before maybe getting an FP5.
I reset it half a year ago due to these issues and it didn’t change anything so it’s probably not an apps or junk issue.

I experienced exactly the same on my FP3. With the help of a network monitor app I could observe what happens when I switch off airplane mode after a couple of hours: Almost every single app starts calling home, uploading and downloading data from their servers. As some apps do this preferably with Wi-Fi, the experience here is worse than with 4G.
I almost gave up until I uninstalled a few apps recently, among them Whatsapp, OneDrive, MS Word - I don’t remember all of them. Since then the system ui does not crash anymore, and the period for which the phone is unusable went down from approximately 8 minutes to maybe 3 minutes.
So: I guess that the problem lies in the many connections being opened by apps, for which the phone is just too slow to handle the processes. Try to remove apps which you don’t need and observe whether anything changes for the better.

@FairyUltra, in which case, if you can get logcat --buffer=crash connected, it may be of use to know whether the “crash” is a fatal exception or an ANR. If the latter, it indicates that the smartphone is indeed being overwhelmed.
