FP1 Spare parts availability (batteries, displays, motherboards, etc. [out of stock!?])

Hi,

Still no display available and I really need one!
My fairphone fell several weeks ago and I just don’t have a phone anymore, that is not possible (oh yes, I’ve an old one that alows me phoning but strictly this…).

Please tell me they’re available soon…

Furthermore, can somebody help me about this: My fairphone connects (bluetooth for instance) as “FP1”, but I bought it on Novembre 2014, and I saw FP1U started in “mid-2014” so… Do you think mine can be a FP1 or a FP1U? (Do your FP1U connect as “FP1”?). And does this change anything about replacing the display?

Thanks to all of you…

Hi Faribule,

you can check behind your battery to find out whether you have a FP1 or FP1U. Both identify as FP1 when using bluetooth though. You can change that name in the bluetooth settings btw.

I am waiting for a new display as well, did you already put your email on the notification list? Lets hope that they are ready soon.

Greetings, ace28

Hi,
Is there an update on the display? My phone is almost unusable at the moment (also because of an unfortunate fall). I’m already on the notification list but a small update would be much appreciated. (I asked on support a couple of weeks ago but did not get a reply). I’m still a fan and hope I don’t have to go back on an old phone.
Thanks!

That was so simple… Thank you ace28!!

I’ve already put my email on the notification list, and I am now waiting…

Hi everyone!

as the display assemblies are out of stock for almost half a year and I doubt I’m the only one with a totally unusable phone:
Did any one manage to repair their phone somehow else, like using third-party parts? Is there a phone using the same screen, so one could replace it by that? I herd the design was abbreviated from some Chinese manufacturer. Maybe with a little playing around there is a chance to use a spare display of one of their models?

Best regards,
dom

Other than scavenging parts from FP1(U)s that were broken in some other way, not that I’m aware of. Screens assemblies from other models by the same manufacturer are unlikely to fit, as even the FP1U screen doesn’t fit the FP1 motherboard (but the FP1 screen does fit the FP1U motherboard apparently).
Whether you could replace parts within the display assembly is another question. A discussion on glass-swapping is here. In theory the actual panel used could be found somewhere, but then you run into the same issue as with the glass-swap.
If you do really want to search for spares for the most similar phone in the hope that against the odds the screen will be useful: you’re looking for spares for a Changhong Honphone V9 (having good working knowledge of Mandarin is probably a pre-requisite).

Maybe you can find your required parts here:

I was passionate about FairPhone and the idea since the beginning and got my FP1 first edition. But now touchscreen does not detect touches, but display works just fine. Since I am waiting already for more than half a year on a spare part but still nothing, I am giving up. FP1 goes into a trash can and i go for Huawei for 120 euro and i’ll just stop kidding my self about these matters anymore.
Bye FairPhone! (Fairphone: Confirmation order 16591)

Hi all!

Thanks for the infos @Johannes and @werner_noebauer!

I of course already checked the used-Fairphones-thread. Unfortunately, there is quite some folks in need of a display and only few phones with working displays for sale, so I consider this not very promising…

@Johannes, you are very right about the required Chinese skills for any information about the Changhong Honphone V9. Seems like it was only sold in china and therefore only some tech reviews were translated to English. As my Chinese is very bad (say, none), I asked a Chinese friend to do a little searching for me. Lets see what he might find…

That’s sad, @Rolands_Jjj, but of course I can understand your reasons…

Best regards
dom

EDIT: lots of typos…

That’s a waste, as I’m guessing you could still sell it to someone who needs a working motherboard. There’s an informal/unofficial marketplace here.

By the way, did you break the screen in an accident? Otherwise half a year ago this still would have been a warranty issue…

Hi,
I do not know what exactly caused the issue, it glitched couple times that day and just stopped reacting to touch totally. Screen works great but does not react to touch. Might be humidity or smthg else. I did this factory test and indeed screen did not react there too. I was hoping for a fix, looks simple enough that I could do it myself, but since there are no spare part available since October or so, it can’t be done.
I have no idea how much the rest of the phone is worth, so instead of promising something to people about the spare parts and waste my/their time, I’ll just move on with some new low-end 100euro smartphone.
GL to FP team.

Hi all!

My Chinese friend just found me this:
(outer glass with touch).

The images do not look right, but that might be sample images. The V9 can be selected on the right. My friend will ask the shop, if this will match the V9 and if it does, I’ll definitely give it a try as it is cheap and my screen still works perfectly, so I don’t need more than that.

I’ll keep you posted about the progress!

Best regards,
Dominik

EDIT: more typos…
EDIT2: There is also an image of the right model, if you scroll down… Didn’t see that, sorry!

Some of us are in China right now and they just mailed me a picture from the Hi-P factory.

That are FP1 displays.

Yes! Finally after months of problems and waiting we will have a big pile of FP1 displays coming our way!

@Rolands_Jjj: Please, don’t just throw it into trash! There are valuable parts and resources (metals etc.) in it, so at least give it to a recycling company, if giving it to other FP1 users costs too much time for you!

However, @Johannes is completely right and I don’t think you’d waste other’s time, because I guess there are people who’d take it. And it doesn’t cost much time and effort to just post a short message in the Unofficial second hand market thread and then send a parcel to somebody who is interested. You might even still get 50€ or so for it. If you don’t know how much it is worth, just ask how much people would pay for it in the before mentioned topic.

And in fact, before you throw it away, I’d take it and would pay the shipping costs (and also 10€ extra if you want) …

And of course, in view of douwe’s post, you could also wait some more weeks to get a working screen …

I’m sorry to say that but, it would have been nice to get more status updates on the displays.
The article about the spare parts supply chain explained a lot and I would have apppreciated it, to get these detailed information sooner.
Also: Your last post on the end of february gave me hope that it wouldn’t take that much longer, since you already tested the screens.
But if i got it right the displays are produced right now. Is there a date on which you expect the displays to arrive in the netherlands? one month or six months? Just to get a clue…

Although I still think that the FP is a great idea and I would want to support the idea further, I think my next phone wont be a FP

  • first broken battery (warranty case, still left me months without a phone)
  • broken display for 6 months now
  • lots of problems with space capacity on my phone (i know there is a way to fix it but i’m not as much a technical person as i should be to fix it the fast and easy way - it will probably take me days to reorganize internal memory and phone memory)
  • the FP will be to expensive for me, when I need a new phone (why is the FP2 so expensive compared to the FP1? probably because of the features, I know. But why did you decide to produce a high end phone? just out of curiosity?)

So I think as I just want to have a simple phone that works (for calling, messaging and checking train schedules), can be repaired easily and therefore is a sustainable and social phone, I dont fit your target group any more

A post was split to a new topic: Storage Upgrade is complicated and takes a long time

@Stefan : Thank you. Good to know. Wasn’t aware of the fact that in the FP1 the components were of less quality

I also have a broken screen for six months now, and to be honest i´m more than tired of waiting for the displays to be available again.
There was an update earlier in the thread that said they should have been available at the end of march, but that didn´t happen. I really don´t like the idea of a) paying quite a lot of money for the screen and b) having to wait for such a long time.
In my eyes, such an issue really undermines the credibility of a fair phone being able to keep up with normal phones standards…at least in terms of repairability, for which i had high hopes.

Hey @Sierra,

Yes, we are with you on this one. The availability of spare parts for the FP1 has been a much longer and tougher journey then we anticipated at first. I hope you have read our blog about spare parts where we explain some of the difficulties in getting screens and batteries.

We’re planning to write more about the issues to get the screen in a future blog post.

But as it looks now we’ll have loads of batteries before the end of the month and somewhere around 900 screens. As there are currently over 1.000 people waiting for a new screen we expect them to be sold out fast…

Then it is STILL a failure, and you will still have over a hundred customers EVEN LESS happy because they will be facing another indeterminate wait for a working “repairable” phone. At that point, there is no blog post that will help restore the lost goodwill. You need actions, not words.
