FP Security Updates need to be more frequent

Waiting for security patches in software is like taking your malaria medication a month after returning.

We beta testers are on the same patch level as everyone else so it seems a new update isn’t as near as we’d hope.

Yes, as I said in another thread, it wouldn’t surprise me if they had decided that monthly security patches was too good for old products…

Sustainability my eye.

As I posted elsewhere, I applied the latest software update to my FP4 as soon as it was available to me (I’m on EE in the UK), so in early May I applied FP4.TP2D.C.0112.20240313 which includes security update 5 March 2024.
It’s far from ideal to have to wait 2 months to apply a security update!
Really, how much testing is required to release a software update where the only change is the security update? I would have thought the required testing could be fully automated.
Assuming that someone from FairPhone reads these discussions, perhaps they would like to reply? Your customers are waiting eagerly! :slightly_smiling_face:

As this is an users forum, you are wrong in thinking that Fairphone is reading here.

Oh, I do hope not! Fairphone employees post to other threads so I would expect that each thread would be read by at least one employee. This forum site is after all a Fairphone marketing tool through which they get real world user feedback.
That said, I just spotted that you are a Community Moderator (so perhaps you know better than I) and a Fairphone Angel; what’s a Fairphone Angel?

this is the fairphone angels program. i think this will explains it for you

I’m sure they do. The question is if they care. FP4 has been out for two years and random breaks in security updates seems to be the norm sadly.

Given the whole “ethical” and “responsible” marketing speech I would had expected some more commitment, but apparently money speaks louder.

I can’t remember getting all these updates individually. Here the updates are always offered cumulatively and you have to live with that, or look for another offer.
Security updates are not defined as having to be installed IMMEDIATELY, but in a timely manner. And everyone interprets this differently.

so much for apples and oranges

Yes, and that’s indeed the problem with Fairphone: They mix things which shouldn’t be mixed. While I was happy to eventually get an improved camera app, monthly security fixes should not have to wait for potential feature updates.
IMHO, YMMV, and all that. :man_shrugging:

This isn’t an option: I’ve shelled out good money for my FP4, and I don’t intend to throw it away and shell out even more money just because Fairphone can’t get their act together. Call me stingy but I intend to get value for my money.

But when I have decided this one has outlived its usefulness, it is very unlikely I’ll buy another Fairphone indeed. Fool me once…

We still use the May update, but the actual one fixes partly severe problems: Android: Google schließt teils kritische Lücken am Juli-Patchday | heise online

Seriously, “security level: May 5th” is nice, but we’re July 12th now.

Yikes! :worried:
What happened? Did Swisscom and Fairphone fall out?

The only (at least for me) acceptable excuse would be, if the are working on A14. As it is available for the FP5 already there is a good chance that that is the case

On the other hand I sure hope we won’t have to wait each time for a new Android version to get the Monthly Security Updates, which, as their name suggest, should be monthly… :astonished:

Ding-dong!
Today is September 12th, my security update is still from July 5th.

“Regular updates”, they said…

To shreds you say?

I’m a beta tester for the FP4 and I haven’t heard squat in months.
