Fairphone innaccessible after failed Android 13 upgrade

After the phone trying to upgrade to Android 13 automatically it does not work anymore. When I enter the PIN it loops between a Fairphone animation and the start page. I cannot enter nether of the troubleshot options (via Volume down + power button). And in the shop they told me that they cannot recover any data! So they wanted to make a new installation, but I want to at least recover the data. Any ideas? Maybe a software I can use? How can really the data have disappeared because of a routine installation by the manufacturer?

What happens to my phone is very similar to what is described here

But this seems to be a hardware failure. I hope is not the case.

Hello, could you please specify what update you mean as many (most?) FP4s have received the update to Android 15 at the end of October

I can’t, since it is my girlfriends phone. It happened on the 30th of November. She told me Android 13, but it can be Android 15. What I wonder is how can it be so bad from a software update that not even the data can be recovered in the repair shop.

Welcome to the Fairphone communication forum.

Sorry to hear this happened.

During an update the device is vulnerable, a small error, such as a power interruption, or a corrupted file, can cause the update to fail and make the data on the device inaccessible, this is in most cases impossible to recover. This risk exists with all brands and devices, including computers. The chance is small, but it does happen regularly.

It has happened to me once before with another phone.

That’s why making a backup beforehand is really important.
Unfortunately, for now it’s too late, but hopefully this helps others who are reading along.

What makes me think, maybe there is a known issue. From what I understand now, it’s unlikely that wat happened to you was caused by that issue.

Wat was the provider of the SIM how was in the Fairphone 4 during the update?

The SIM is from Drilling Prepaid.

Thank you to dig in the installation callendar. I wonder why they don’t check the operating systems before ofering the patch!

Update: In the repair shop the installed Android again and miraculously all the data was still there. Althigh the guys in the shop said they would no be there.
