Fairphone 6 – Proximity sensor wrongly interrupts voice notes

On my Fairphone 6, whenever I try to record or listen to voice messages (for example in WhatsApp), the phone behaves as if I am holding it to my ear during a call:

The screen blacks out.

Voice note recording stops mid-way.

Audio playback switches to the top earpiece only (very quiet).

This happens even when the phone is just held in front of me, and nothing is close enough to simulate an ear. Removing case and screen protector does not solve it.

It looks like the proximity sensor is firing too easily, treating normal use as a call scenario. This did not happen on my previous phones with the same apps and Android version.

Has anyone else with an FP6 experienced this? Could this be a calibration or firmware issue with the new sensor hardware?

Bumping the thread back up because this issue persists.

You might check the distance sensor (you should find the tests in the fairphone app → support → More → Internal Tests).

I don’t know if you understand but basically what’s going on is that this is a feature of the phone it’s nothing to do it having it too much sensitive distance sensor, if that makes sense.

I don’t particularly like it but this is what there is until it is fixed for these apps that use voice notes there are social.

If it happens on all FP6 devices then it’s probably a “feature of the phone” resp. a SW problem.
As there are no other similar reports up to now it imho still might be a HW problem of your device.

You are not alone. I find it really annoying. Was looking for a solution. There might be an option to turn off the proximity sensor via an android tile. Will try this out.
