Fairphone 6 Murena keyboard

The standard keyboard that comes with the Murena installation does not automatically switch languages as I type: the way to do it is to hold the space bar, then select a different language. This influences next-word prediction. (I’m constantly switching between English, Dutch and French)

Therefore I had to install Gboard from Google: after a few words it knows what language I’m using and switches the next-word proposals to that language.

So far so good, but:

1— it meant downloading something from Google,

2— Gboard has to be launched again after each power-down/power-up. How can I set automatic launch of Gboard?

Well, you could have installed a different keyboard if you don’t want the one from Google  Here are some suggestions of other forum users: Any good keyboard app without gen AI? - #13 by bjoern52

I can set my default keyboard in settings: system - keyboard. Fairphone OS, /e/OS might be different. Search for keyboard in settings

1 - you can consider to remove Internet permission for the gboard app if you want to avoid data transfer to Google

2 - if you enable the gboard as only keyboard in settings->system->keyboard->on-screen keyboard then it should survive a reboot.

Thanks, I’ll try that.

So, I set the gBoard to the only board, and it does survive reboot.

You wrote “… remove internet permission for the gBoard app”, but I could not find anywhere to do that. Did I miss something?

Great that it’s persistent now.

For app internet access go to
Settings → apps → gboard → mobile data usage
Disable “allow network access”

Thanks, that worked too.

I wish there were someonein the app ecosystem supervising the app interfaces, and also that there were some guidelines for developers. For example, why do I have to go to Apps for internet access, instead of Permissions? In System Settings, under Apps it says

Recent apps, default apps

but it does not say, as it should:

Recent, default, permissions

so obviously, I did not look there.

Then, tonight I went out into nature with my grandson, to listen to the rut calls of deer in a nearby nature reserve. I wanted to use the Recorder app, but it asked me if I would allow notifications. I tapped “No”. (I did not want extra sounds). But then it refused to record because permissions were denied (it did not tell me which ones).
Why the heck does Recorder need notification permission to record?? I then used WhatsApp to record a message to myself.
When back at home I found out that giving notification permission does enable recording… Is this in any way logical?
Sigh.

Robert.

Because recorder shows in the notifications a running recording. And the running recording is managed in these notifications like pausing or stopping the recording.
Still I completely understand you. The recording could also be controlled in the app itself (when permission is not given) and it would be much better if the app gave a hint which permission would be needed to run successfully. But well, sigh,…
