When you plug in the phone while it is locked, Battery protect seems to be ignored.
From time to time, system has to recalibrate the battery.
Same behavior on a Pixel. After each software update or monthly at least, charge goes to 100%.
It sounds like a bug to me.
Does it happen every time? Like anytime the phone is locked?
Yes, it’s reproducible every time. Make sure the phone is not plugged in and it’s locked, then plug in and there it is.
Locked = turned off?
Because the battery protection only works if the phone is on
Yes, that seems to be the case. But should it be? I don’t know what the technical limitations are, but I suspect that certain settings can be read by the system even when locked.
To me it still looks like a bug.
It seems I misunderstood your message - I thought the screen was locked but the phone was on.
If the phone is off, the battery limitations will not work.
Thank you @janweiss for spotting that.
Not sure if I specified my question clear enough.
Does the battery protection not work for you when
a) the phone is powered off, and charging (screen black, on button-click only charging animation) or
b) the phone is powered on, but the screen turned off (screen black, and locked with a pin, “locked”)?
a) is expected. Same on the Fairphone 5, most likely won’t change.
b) would be an error. Try to reboot, factory-reset, contactsupport
it’s b) phone powered on, screen requiring pin / black
a) would not be a problem.
I have tried reboot (restart) and that seems to work. Now I get a charging symbol only initially, after a few seconds replaced by a non-charging battery symbol.
Thanks!
Similar issue observed here: since update 3.3-a15, the charging limit isn’t respected anymore. Rebooting doesn’t solve anything.
Any more tips?
I thought it had been solved by rebooting, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. It is working for a while and then for some reason unclear to me, it is charging to 100% again.
Which software are you using? Is it a fast charger or a slow one?
With old android software (148 if I don’t recall wrongly) wirh a fast charger it was overriding everything (speed and charge limit) and following that the phone died in some cases like mine.
(My fairphone 6 died suddenly)
In that thread people with e/os started reporting too. So I’d use a slow charger and check if it happens or not. And also pay attention to the temperature while charging, it should not get hot.
Android 15 most recent update. Set to Eco Charge and Battery Protect. I charge it via the USB-C port of my notebook. The phone indicates slow charging. I haven’t noticed anything getting hot.
Some people suggest it’s got to do with recalibrating the battery. But I wouldn’t expect that to happen as often as I have seen with my phone. To me it looks more like a bug that disables the stop at 80% charging without showing it in the setting. Maybe interference from another setting. I have disabled Battery Saver, just a guess.
