Could be useful for switchers (especially from the iPhone) who want to keep using their magsafe accessoires like card holders, stands, rings. I just wonder if the magnetic strength is still good enough?
For the last 10-11 years I had a Samsung S5 with an Otterbox case, and the screen is still completely scratch free and the device looks brand new.
Presently I upgraded to Fairphone 6, but the screen broke within the first 3 months of me owning it, as the Fairphone provided case was completely not up to the task.
First of all it does not protect the screen at all, there is no cover over it. The “screen protector” does not seem to do anything at all, I am not sure what it is for.
Secondly it does not enclose the phone in a hard casing, so any flexing forces are transmitted straight onto the phone.
Thirdly the rubber does not protrude above the screen significantly, so it does not absorb pressure of the phone being applied a weight on.
This is not robust enough and will be very expensive to own if I need to get it 4 screens per year. I don’t do anything especially bad to the phone, but the daily life of living at a regenerative project takes its toll on things around you.
Do there exist cases that fully and permanently enclose the phone in a hard shell from all sides and then add on a sufficient amount of soft protection to the outside, like the Otterbox cases did for S5?
This does sound you use your phone, differently as I do. So under which conditions/use cases do you use a phone that heavy weight is on it or that its bend? And for sure under such extrem conditions a screen protector isnt doing anything thats not what its made for in general.
Well, when this screen broke I put my phone on my lap, as I looked up, and at that moment my dog decided to go onto my lap, and stepped onto the phone, which immediately snapped the screen in two. Otterbox case would have prevented it in the first place because the outer hard plastic protrudes 2-3mm above the screen, and the rubber protrudes a further 7-10mm in front of that, which means the dog would have just knocked the phone onto the sofa instead of breaking it, or just ended up stepping onto the hard shell and not the inner screen. Tudia case above does not seem to be significantly better than the stock case.
…and this is not the only thing that sometimes happens to the device - occasionally it will get dropped from living room table when a dog tail knocks it off, or dropped onto the ground from 1m or so, or sometimes it will end up next to me in bed, with either a dog or me rolling over onto it.
Yes, I understand one could say “Stop putting your phone where it can be knocked off things or dropped from places - store it locked away in a safe place away from potential harm” - but I have it to use it, if I did not want to use it I would not have it.
Thanks for thr details which made me smile, as I work with dogs and can imagine your explanation.
You use your phone as you wish, however you choose a niche product and the bigger third party case provider dont seem to see an advantage for them to produce their product for the Fairphones.
So for me there are 3 Options:
3D print a case that fits your needs
change your habits a bit to avoid drops and pressure
Oooh, 3D printing a case is obviously the solution here! Fantastic idea! It means I can still use a niche product and can keep using the device as I want to.
I bought one for FP5 a couple of years ago and it was absolutely a masterpiece. I also broke it once but fixing it with a bit of vinyl glue was very easy.
The only doubt I have is about the back which is completely closed.
Can this impact on heat dissipation? I never felt my phone’s back getting hot but who knows…
I am very interested by this concept - anything to make the screen less fragile. Could you perhaps link to one provider of such a protector for FP6, so I know what kind of thing to look for?
For me this problem is sadly not limited to phones - I frequently find my ebook readers were left in bags that someone decided to compress, or subject to reading in bed accidents that physical books would end up slightly creased by, but the ebook readers met their en.
As for heat dissipation, yes, ambient temperature for me gets into the mid 40s in the summer, so it could be a concern, but next summer is months away, and I have just had a summer with FP6 and it performed admirably in terms of heat management, even with the stock case covering the back and the sides. This is in comparison to my thinkpad which now has noticeable signs of thermal warping where the plastic expanded permanently - its shape will never be quite the same again.
I guess I live in a somewhat tech-hostile environment and expect my tech to keep up.
on screen protectors please have a look within this topic. I don’t have FP6 so I cannot really advise. For FP5 I shared some notes but not sure how relevant they might be in your case
I have a very bad experience with e-ink book readers, one shattered just falling from the desk. Unfortunately the screen protectors are not sufficient in most of the cases (I believe because of how the screen is constructed). It is not forum relevant but I have invested in an additional case, an additional hard sleeve and even purchased some additional tape to protect it further. Fingers crossed it will help this time.
To celebrate the release of the new Fairphone 6 case, our friends at Bark Sweden are giving away one of their beautiful wooden cases!
The giveaway is hosted on the Fairphone subreddit: r/Fairphone
How to join:
Head over to the subreddit and share a photo of your favorite tree in the giveaway post.
The winner will get to choose a Fairphone case of their choice from Bark Sweden’s collection.
Who is Bark Sweden?
Bark Sweden makes cases for Fairphone, Apple, and Samsung S-series phones using recycled Swedish hardwood.
Their production is based in Stockholm, Sweden.
For the new Fairphone 6, buttons are now located on both sides of the phone. Bark Sweden chose to add new wooden buttons over the microphone area to give the case extra strength, instead of using an open design.
The wood also protrudes 1 mm around the screen to protect it if the phone is placed face down.
Giveaway runs until Sunday, 23:59 CET.
Good luck everyone! PS: There’s a little surprise waiting for all participants!
