Fairphone 4 home page loading laggy since Android 15 update

Hi.

Since the Android 15 update, the apps on the home screen are taking 5-7 seconds to appear, and when I leave or close an app I often have to wait for the icons to load, rather than them being there already.

Same here, I use Nova Launcher, and it seems to take some secs to get back to the launcher from any other app, even if the battery optimization is switched off for the launcher app.
Does any one have an idea, what the root cause could be?

Hi,

I have the same problem with smart launcher.

All in all I have the feeling the performance has gone down since the A15 update.

Same issue here, probably also since the last update.

Got this exact problem. Not only the home page (launcher) is laggy. Every app is.
For example, I open Firefox, browse a website, I need to check smth in another app, I go back to home screen, it’s empty, has to load icons/widgets. I switch back to the browser, but it has to load again, the big Firefox icon splash screen, the website loads again. It’s unbearable!

Cleared app cache for GBoard, instant relief!

Even if I do not use GBoard?

ANSWER: Yes, even if you do not use GBoard it helps to make the lag vanish  How easy was that?

Same for me. I had action launcher. With nova launcher it got a bit better.

Hi Andreas,

Did you notice that clearing the cache of GBoard did fix the problem for at least two persons? See the two posts above yours

Greets Robert

I use Nova, too. But the lag disappeared only when I had cleaned the GBoard cache

EDIT: Today I had to use GBoard instead of the keyboard I use normally. After that the lag was back and disappeared only after cleaning the GBoard cache again.

Isn’t this related to this other problem?

Still got the issue. Clearing the Gboard cache seems to help a bit, sometimes, but not much.

It definitely helps. However GBoard is not only used as keyboard (which I disabled) but also for the spell checking. So far I have not found any decent replacement for this, in order to be able to disable GBoard completely.
As it is still running you need to clear the cache every now and then.

It is the same problem – A15 has killed the launcher because something (probably the display driver, going by the fact that it causes insta-reboots too) has leaked memory so badly that there’s hardly any left, hence it’s having to kill the launcher, apps playing music, and other things it would really rather not.

It’s now been five months and this obvious bug is still not fixed, even though it’s trivially reproducible, renders the phone almost unusable, stands out a mile in the logs, and probably stands out a mile in ps output as well (likely pointing directly to the culprit). Does Fairphone have anyone working on software at all?!

Well if it is so easy to reproduce and understand, where is your fix?

I and a whole lot of other people do not have this problem, therefore your assumptions regarding the cause of the issue are wrong or at least incomplete.

I can’t fix it. Fairphone’s OS is not practically fixable by end-users (at least not without unlocking the phone, which is not something I’m willing to do with a work-critical device I use for various things that require locked bootloaders like banking).

I’m fairly astonished to discover that any users aren’t being affected by the various flavours of OOM. Do you really not get any background music kills? I never had any before A15 hit my FP4, and now I literally can’t keep anything running in the background (including music playback) for more than about a minute before A15 kills it on account of OOM.

No, no out of memory (OOM) crashes on the two A15 FP4s in our household. Also no other issues with the phones.

The symptoms of OOM are not crashes – they are sudden inexplicable kills of apps that are still doing things, like background music play, being halfway through critical form-filling and you last used the app five seconds ago but now it’s restarting, going back to the home screen taking ten seconds because the launcher got terminated (which should never happen under normal use), etc, etc.

Don’t try to teach me, I am a developer. I just try being understandable by the mixed crowd of this forum. But anyway, I have never experienced anything like that. My phone just works - fast - since four years.

Same here, no problem with any killed app or service caused by the OS/LMK.
Also I have not encountered any of the problems others noticed since the rollout of A15.
I only have the high battery usage since Android 13 which is annoying but compared to the other possible bugs still acceptable.
