I am interested in buying the fairbuds, but I really don’t want to install the closed source app. Is it possible to use them without it? Or, alternatively, is there some other app I can use instead?

You can use them like any Bluetooth headset. The app merely provides nice to haves, like an EQ and it is how you update the firmware. But it’s absolutely not required.
I do recommend installing it just for the firmware update though. Then once you’re up to date, you can delete the app.

The app doesn’t work anyway. So it makes no difference whether with or without the app.
