A few days ago I pluged the charger in after a couple of hours there was a message “Slow charging full in 24 hours”. I let it charge until it was at 100%. Last night I let the battery discharge until the phone shut down, 0% charge. 2 hours after pluging it in the battery was at 80% charge. Is there any explaination for the drastic difference in charging rates
Most likely down to the USC C connector or lead. The FP3 USB C port is not great quality. Ports on some other devices lock the plug in with a snap, but all cables wobbled on my FP3 from day 1. From a recommendation here, I purchased an an Anker cable, that is much more reliable than anything I had before.
There are three charging rate tiers. Slow, normal and fast. The phone negotiates it’s charge rate with chargers that speak the same language Charging will default to slow and progress up the steps, first to normal and then to fast if the charger tells the FP it is capable. Some chargers are only able to provide up to normal rate, my PC can only provide slow as it doesn’t speak my phones language.
Of course other things can cause your charge rate to default to slow (use your favourite search engine to search for reasons). If I knew charger was capable of normal or fast charge and only charging slowly, I would first reverse the USC C plug 180 degrees, then reboot the phone, then try another cable.
I have had the slow charging once. That’s when I got some water in my phone behind the usb connector. After drying it worked again as normal. Could something like that be the cause?
The phone has not been near moisture.
Perhaps there was some dirt temporarily preventing normal charging.
I’ll try it again. Full discharge to full charge. 0 to 100 in 2 hours that seems too fast. oops Mistake 0 to 80% in 2 hours. Read the going over 80% shortens the life of the battery.
Notsure what you mean. I have a number of wall plugs, with built-in USB charging ports.
I discharged the battery to 20% then tried to charge. There was a notice that it was on slow charge and would take 1 day and 14 hours. I unplugged and reinserted the charging cable the notice was about the same 1 day and approx 14 hours. I then let the battery discharge until the phone shut down. The charging time to 80% was a little over 2 hours. Is there something wrong here or is this normal? This became more noticeable after I updated to 3.0.1-t-20250606498724-official-FP3.
I have a so called battery testing app “Battery life & Health” installed; it claims that the battery health is 100%
Does anyone have real experience trouble shooting the FP3?
As you have been told, it is most likely the USB-C port. Even if your phone hasn’t been around dust or moisture, it may have been getting it with normal use. Here’s an easy guide on how to clean it:
It could also be that your USB-C port is broken. You can either buy a new one
or see if there is a fairphoneangel near you to see if they can give you a hand or try it out a differente one.
The last option I can think of is what you have been told: try changing the cable and/or the wall plug. Sometimes that can be the problem.
Muy own experience: I’ve had that problem a few years ago on my FP3 a couple of times, and once I solved it by changing the USB-C cable I was using, and the other time by opening the phone and cleaning the port and connections with isopropyl alcohol:
Good luck
How long did you leave it on slow charge? Sometimes you need to wait for at least 5 minutes for it to reliably predict the charging time.
Update. Cleaned the charging port using contact cleaner and a tooth brush..
The battery was discharged to 20% so I plugged it in, after about 5 minutes the estimated charging time was 1 day and 14 hours. I unplugged the charger and let the battery discharge until the phone shut down, then charged it. The battery charged to 80% in about 2 hours. I left it plugged in over night and then let it discharge until the phone shut down again and repeated that charging procedure. It charged to 100% in a little over 2 hours, I left it on the charger over night again.
Hope I don’t need a new battery, they seem almost impossible to buy let alone ship to Canada.
Fairphone doesn’t ship outside of Europe. Looks like I an out of luck
Sorry, I hope that cleaning has been an effective option for a long time .
I see you are aware that there are folks from Canada on the forum, so I assume you have already taken a look at the canada tag and that you are also aware that there is a marketplace on the forum where you can post that you are looking for that piece and maybe someone can help you.
Best of luck.
