Exploring Customizability for Fairphone

Hi Fairphone Community,

I’m currently working on a school project exploring how Fairphone can make ethical smartphone production go mainstream. I chose Fairphone because of its unique approach to sustainability and ethical production, but I believe there’s even more potential for this amazing brand to grow.

After researching Fairphone’s current strategy, I developed a key insight that I think could help the brand reach a wider audience: Customizability.

Why Customizability?

Right now, Fairphone’s design focuses on repairability and ethical production, which are fantastic values. However, I believe that by allowing users to customize their phones to better fit their needs and personal tastes, Fairphone could attract more buyers.

Imagine being able to:

  • Choose hardware components like processors, cameras, and batteries based on your preferences.
  • Personalize the look with customizable backplates, colors, and even collaborations with popular brands.
  • Upgrade your device over time without needing to buy a completely new phone.

This approach would not only enhance the sustainability and lifespan of Fairphone devices but also appeal to tech enthusiasts who want more performance or personalization options.

I Need Your Feedback!

I’m sharing this idea here because I truly value the community’s input. What do you think about introducing more customizability to Fairphone? Would this make the brand more appealing to you or others you know? Do you have any suggestions on how this could be implemented?

Your insights would be incredibly helpful for my school project, and they could also contribute to the future of Fairphone! I’m excited to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

Thank you for your time and support!

Best regards

Hi
I think upgradability has been talked the most about as many people would want that. So I agree with @yvmuell that you will find more information on that across the forum, I also think it is not feasible to achieve that now.

But some sort of personalisation and collaboration with other brands could be made easier, in my eyes. Yes, you can choose a different back cover but without a transparent case no-one would notice. The choice of cases and accessories is also not that wide. Not to mention, FP is yet to produce a FP5 phone case that would receive praise at this forum.

Hi Magreit

Also from me - welcome to the forum.
Interesting approach.
Some ideas from my side

Choose hardware components
With the perspective of a technician and project manager this seems to me the toughest point.
What is quite successful when customizing PCs and laptops in online shops is technically more difficult with a smartphone.

  • Fairphone would have to stock a lot more of components (incl. maintaining the full supply chain, QM, etc… for all of them)
  • The fast technical turnover (i.e. the raised expectation to stock the ‘hottest stuff’) would be an additional challenge
  • With such highly integrated hardware as a smartphone you’ll run into constant problems with the reliability of the devices (you’d have to do QM for all possible combinations of components!) resulting in an increasing number of dissatisfied customers costing you reputation (have a look arund in this form already )
  • And all that for a rather limited share of potential customers. As you write ‘appeal to tech enthusiasts’

So I imagine, commercially this would rather be a disadvantage.

Upgrade your device over time is what is already a main business model of Fairphone. I’d be interested if you have been coming up with potential improvements there.

Personalize the look seems to me a promising field for further expansion. Because this caters more to the needs of younger folks and the ‘average users’ (in contrast to the tech enthusiasts). Also technically / organisationally this should be much more feasible.

Hope this helps and good luck with your project.
Perhaps you want to post / link the final results here.
