Hi everybody,
I have a Fairphone 5 and I’m currently travelling to Australia. I took a SIM card here, from Optus, and it has veen working perfectly fine for the past two weeks. Tonight, Fairphone asked me to do a security update, which I did, and since then my SIM card doesn’t work. I get the message “SIM card 1 not autorized”.
I tried to restart the phone but it’s still the same. I also tried to go on Airplane mode and then back: when I do this, the SIM card works for a few second (enough to receive a SMS) and then it stops working again.
Can anybody help me please?
Have a good day/evening!
Laurianne
It’s a long shot.
Could you remove the SIM card and restart the phone?
Then stop the phone and insert the SIM card again, restart the phone.
Did you check the SIM network settings are set to at least 4G and VoLTE is enabled?
You could try to reset the network settings.
And did you contact the provider to ensure the update wasnt just a coincidence and maybe the SIM is faulty or has any other issues?
Hi, thank you all for the replies!
I forgot to specify that I had an eSIM. Switching on and off the phone as well as putting the physical SIM in didn’t work. The option for 4G and VoLTE did not appear for my SIM.
I went to my SIM provider to check the situation.
They gave me a new SIM card (physical) and it is working well! However, we also tried an eSIM and this fails. They recommended that I stick to the physical card and said that probably my phone is not compatible with eSIM anymore. I’ve been using eSIM for a while so I’m surprised, the issue could be coming from the Fairphone update.
@yvmuell, would you know if resetting the mobile network settings will delete my Signal and WhatsApp profile? I didn’t dare to try yet.
Hi @Lau1,
sorry to hear that you phone is not longer recognizing eSIM’s.
happy to hear you can temporary use the physical SIM.
Signal and WhatsApp ar two seperate apps (applications) and do not have anything to do with the provider, mobiele netwerk, or SMS/MMS messages.
this mobile network reset is quite harmless, in normal operation your phone wil automatic configuration all settings. no customer information or account information will be removed. of course it is always advisable to check if your backup settings are correct and a backup has been performed recently.
Reading wat you and your provider’s service agent already tried i start thinking that you will need to contact your reseller or Fairphone suport to get your phone send in for repair.
if possible wait until the end of your Travels.
-
Try the network settings Reset,
-
ask if a different provider wil test a eSIM in your phone.
greetings
Tom
Do you need eSIM to work while you are in Australia, now that you have working physical SIM? If not, I would actually not experiment further now as long its working. Else, no, network setttings should not touch any accounts, you can chose to only reset mobile data settings incl or not deletion of eSIMs
Thank you all! For now I will do with the physical SIM card. It is a bit troublesome because I also had my home physical SIM card in the phone, so I had to remove it to use the Australian one instead. I am staying in Australia for an entire year.
My boyfriend has the same phone and the same provider, for now everything is working on his side but he hasn’t done the Fairphone update yet. I’ll post a message when he’ll receive the update, to tell you if he has the same issue or not.
As the phone is not authorized in Australia issues can always occur in any way in my eyes, just to keep in mind. Enjoy Australia
Thank you @yvmuell! I’m reading the thread you shared
Before setting up my SIM card, my Australian provider checked that the Fairphone would work correctly here (if I understood him well, 3G network has been shut down and it can impact some phones). My provider checked my IMEI and said it was alright, and it has indeed worked okay for a while.
I’ll go back on reading the thread in the morning,
Cheers!
Hi @Lau1
Do you know what the update reference number is that you installed?
Hello @Sir_Crispy_FP5 , the build number of my update is FP5.UT2L.B.107 (released on March 10th), is that what you’re looking for?
Yes that’s it. Thank you.
Sorry to hear about your issue, I hope the next update resolves the issue.
If you turn off the esim and then turn it back on it will reset the VOLTE function for about 15mins. It is clearly a software bug created that means the VOLTE function is no longer working and this means in Australia the sim is then regarded as invalid. If you have a other physical sim in in Australia from Optus it will work fine as long as the esim is switched off. I need the esim as it is my work number from UK and I need people to contact me so I have contacted fairphone as its a software issue caused from the most recent update as its been fine for a month prior to it and works when you turn off/on the esim.
