Disable recording button on messages app

One of the recent updates has added a record audio button to the SMS messaging app. The new button is on top of the old “send” button, so every time I try to send a message it starts recording audio. Very poor design decision. Is there a way to disable the audio button or roll back the app to an older version that doesn’t have it?

Hi Loftlifter,

That’s easy to resolve: Just write some text into the input field and the recording button changes to “SMS”

Robert, the button doesn’t change when I enter text. That’s the problem. I enter a message, try to hit send and it pops up the recording screen.

What’s the version of your messages app? On my FP4 it is

Version messages.android_20260917_03_RC00.phone_dynamic

Maybe you can try to delete the cache of the app to fix the problem?

Mine says 3.10.1 foundation.e.message Yours is quite different. What version of fairphone are you using?

It doesn’t seem to matter the app used. I installed a different messaging app org.fossify.messages 1.9.1 and the button has the same issue. There is some other part of the OS creating the button.

hello, which keyboard are you using?

android keyboard AOSP 14 com.android.inputmethod.latin

Aha! When I went to add a new keyboard the selector screen shows there is a murena voice to text keyboard also installed. Disabling that removed the problem.
