Digital Assistant

I recently bought a second-hand fairphone6. Because I don’t need intrusive Google tricks, I disabled the digital assistant. Since I did that, I can no longer make hands-free calls with a headset or listen to a radio program: every time a flickering screen comes up that refers to… the digital assistant. Apparently Google wants to force me to turn that thing on anyway. It also doesn’t help if I choose another digital assistant, e.g. from DuckDuck. How can I get out of this ?

I have disabled a lot Google stuff and have no such issues. What exactly did you deactivate?

I deactivated the digital assistant, Gemini !

I have also deactivated Gemini (and far more apps from Google) and no problems like in your description.
Or did I get your situation wrong and you wanted to start a phone call with a voice command?
Could you perhaps share a screenshot of this popup?

H’m. The screen flickers fast, so screenshot is no issue… And I bought the fairphone because deactivating many Google features made it completely ‘unworkable’. I had to restart it on a daily basis to keep it going…

In the settings for “digital assistant” I just tapped “No” and everything went wrong afterwards. I can make phonecalls, I can listen to music or the radio - but not with the headset…

I never use voice commands by the way. I’m oldfashioned…

OK, so I have a clearer look at your situation.
Is the Gemini app the only one that was deactivated by yourself?
As you wrote, that you bought the phone as second hand, are you sure that the former owner did not deactivate more (and “wrong”) apps?
And some more questions:
In which way are you trying to initiate the call with your headset?
And how is the procedure in the situation where you want to listen to radio?

The phone was reset to factory settings before I bought it, so no previous settings are involved.

I connected the headset via the USB-C connection (there is no “jack”-connection). Then I tap the telephone icon, pick the contact I want to call and tap the phone icon. And the circus starts…

When I start a radio, and I connect the headset : same things happen.

that is not the same as deactivating the Gemini App (Settings-Apps-Gemini-Deactivate), you must have deactivated something else I think. I dont think digital assistant is the same as Gemini.

H’m. Doesn’t change anything. I deactiveted Gemini via Settings-Apps-Gemini-Deactivate, but the bloody thing keeps interfering. It stays calm when I make a call or listen without the headset.

Does using a headset requires specific settings ??

whatever happens, its not Gemini interfering, you must have done something else, I have no idea what. Search for Digital Assistant in the settings and check those. And you can use headsets without any digital assistant, at least I can.

Thanks. I’m afraid it’s something about the headset now…

Look at USB Settings, since you are connecting your audio device via USB.

What USB-setting should I check and possibly alter ?

How do you connect your headset?
By Bluetooth?
Then go to the app Settings
Go to Connected devices.
And tap on the cogwheel on the right where your headset is shown.

I have a FP5 with current AOSP (german language) but this should be similar

Go to settings, enter USB in the search bar, you should get

Connect your Audio device via USB first, then go to USB Einstellungen/Settings:

unfortunately, I do not have any USB Audio device, you might select

  • MIDI for Audio

and

  • PTP for Data Transfer

just give it a try
