Custom ROM Murena eOS to FairPhone OS

Hi fellow teckies,

I bought FairPhone 4 from Murena because they ship outside EU (to US). After a series of bad user experiences, including fraudulent bank activity, I would like to expediently switch my FairPhone 4 from e/OS to a secure option, for example, FairPhone OS, Graphene OS or Google’s Android.

I find many posts about fools migrating to e/OS but none of fools (like me) switching away from e/OS. Assuming the traditional approach of resetting to factory settings will not work for a phone shipped with a custom ROM, how should I approach the switch to FairPhone OS? This will be my first phone flashing, so I want to avoid common mistakes and data loss.

Lastly, I actually don’t mind using Google or using data with Google or Google storing my data. I live in the US and Google is so big here that they already know everything I wouldn’t want them to know about me anyways. Best stick with the devil you know; or that knows you!

Welcome to the Community

I haven’t done the procedure myself yet, so others might be more experienced and know better (especially about bootloader questions), but here’s the Fairphone Support article on how to move back to Fairphone OS:

Fairphone OS is a stock Android – including Google services – that the Fairphone usually comes with.

If you follow the links in the article (most importantly, the one on Managing the Bootloader), you will also find out that the data on your phone will be wiped in the course of switching from a custom ROM like /e/OS to Fairphone OS. This wiping is an in evitable part of changing the bootloader status, so it is not a risk, but a certainty. So you need to back up your data first.

What do you mean by ‘fools migrating to eOS’? What’s so foolish about it? Also, could you give more details about how eOS is connected to banking fraud? Thanks.

Furthermore, unfortunately Graphene OS is for Google Pixel phones only. Would love to have it on my Fairphone too.

Hi Jonathan,
As a ‘fool’ considering to switch to e/OS I’m very curious about the fraudulent bank activity. Can you share some parts of your story?
