After leaving the mine, the tungsten concentrate travels to Wolfram Bergbau’s refining facilities in Austria. Here a mass balance model is applied, similar to the supply chain of tin and tantalum. For example, about 50% of the tungsten input comes from recycled sources (learn more about the mass balance model).
(bold by me)
Does this refer to the whole tungsten that is processed in the refining facilities, or to the mass balanced amount of tungsten that is used for the Fairphone 2*? Does somebody understand the true meaning behind the quoted sentence?
*E.g. if 10% of the smelted tungsten at the refining facility would go into the Fairphone 2, this would be 5% recycled tungsten of the total amount compared to the whole 50%.
