Can't use USB data transfer from Windows 10 to FP5

Hello

I can’t get my fairphone 5 to connect properly to my PC so I cannot transfer files to it from the PC. I have been able to do this previously but it doesn’t work now. I’m not getting anywhere with FP support either.

I can:

Connect the phone physically with a USB 3 data cable that works with other phones.

Set the phone to file transfer

The PC does recognise that it’s connected to a FP5 over USB.

BUT

I cannot see any files or folders in file explorer

Universal Adb driver is installed.

Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

Welcome to the Fairphone community.

But you see the phone?

Sorry I should have explained better. It’s both yes and no, I cannot see the phone at all in file explorer. However when I go to eject it on the taskbar, it’s there.

Do you have the screen turned on and the phone unlocked?

Try with Linux USBLive if work here, problem be with Windows drivers, if not, problem be in FP5…

EDIT: if not know how to create Linux USBLive, i recomend simples way: write Xubuntu 24.04 ISO using Etcher

yes. Screen on phone unlocked. Needs to be cos the phone defaults to USB charging and I have to switch it to file transfer

Hi skarp,

I use an FP3 running Android 13, a PC running Linux Mint 22 and a Framework 13 laptop running Windows 10. All three devices connect to the same router wirelessly and so are on the same subnet.

I transfer files wirelessly between the FP3 and the PC using ‘Cx File Explorer’ on the FP3. ‘Nemo’ (the Linux Mint equivalent of Windows ‘File Explorer’) accesses the FP3 file system directly via its ‘Connect to Server option …’.

I also transfer files wirelessly between the PC and the laptop using Warpinator on both (not Winpinator, aka Warpinator for Windows, on the laptop).

I installed Warpinator (unofficilal) from the Play Store onto the FP3 a few minutes ago and successfully transferred a file from the FP3 to the (Windows) laptop, and from the laptop to the FP3. I also successfully transferred a file from the FP3 to the (Linux) PC, and from the PC to the FP3.

I imagine Warpinator and ‘Cx File Explorer’ will run on the FP5. ‘KDE Connect’ should work in much the same way as ‘Cx File Explorer’ but I haven’t tried it for myself on the FP3 yet.

As to Linux - the Live Boot runs from a USB stick (or DVD). And, as it doesn’t make any permanent changes, your PC will revert to booting into Windows once you remove the Live Boot media.

You may find it easier to follow the Live Boot instructions at Linux Mint Installation Guide — Linux Mint Installation Guide documentation - I’d recommend Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition.

And if your PC won’t run Windows 11 you may find switching to Linux full-time is preferable to scrapping your PC come October.
