Can't connect to cellular (so can't make calls or use data). The issue is not the SIM, might be VoLTE, but that won't show up

Hello, everyone! I own a FP4 and my operator is the Norwegian Chili Mobil. Since this saturday I have not been able to make calls or use cellular data. I tried all the usual stuff: rebooting the phone, turning every setting off and on, removing the SIM, and my phone is updated to the most recent version as of today 13:11 CET. I called my operator and they think it has something to do with VoLTE, but that setting doesn’t show up in my settings anywhere. According to some forms online it should be available (Chilimobil uses Telia’s service). Putting my SIM into another phone it works no problem, so it isn’t the SIM itself. The helpdesk asked me to see if I could solve the issue with VoLTE since it will be a while until I can call them again (since, you know, I can’t make calls).

A bit more info is this actually started a month ago. I was visiting my mom who lives somewhere else, and I suddenly couldn’t make calls. I thought it was just bad service as I could make calls once I got back to the city. The sudden loss of service might have happened when I updated to Android 15, but I can’t recall if I did that thursday, friday, saturday or sunday.

I hope you guys can help. As you might imagine this has really been quite a hassle to deal with.

Thanks!

Hello
Does 4G appear anywhere in your settings?

Inside the SIM settings or somewhere else? Inside the SIM settings I have:

  • Mobile Data (on/off)

  • Roaming (on/off)

  • App Data usage, Data Warning Limit

  • Preferred Network Type (set to all)

  • IMEI

  • Wifi Calling

  • Automatically select network (on)

  • Access Point Names (not available for this user)

Hello
Thanks got getting back to me.
Please have a look on my settings.
I have 4G and network type included, I am assuming you don’t have that?

Not that I can see. It’s not inside WiFi-Calling either.

Did you check you APN , if everything is set up OK?
What is your preferred network type?

Preferred is 5G/4G/3G/2G. Nothing happens if I change to 4G/3G/2G, or any of the “smaller” ones.
Opening APNs simply gives me “Access Point Name settings are not available for this user.” I have tried resetting to default, nothing happened. I can add APNs, but I don’t know how to fill out that form.

Can’t help you with the APN settings. That is an information your provider should offer somewhere.
A short search gave me this as result: Chilimobil APN Settings for Android and iPhone 2025 - 3G 4G 5G LTE Internet Setting

Thank you! It did do something. It added a 5G symbol up top and I can use cellular data. This is a huge relief. But I still can’t make calls… I guess only the provider can help me now, but atleast I’m not stranded when off of WiFi. Thank you!

Did you check the VoLTE settings again?

They still won’t show up.

Did you restart then phone or at least try to go to flightmode once and re-enable mobile data once?

Yeah, tried all that afterwards.

Hi Raccon.

I am in Iceland and I have the same problem with my fair phone!

That “Access Point Names (not available for this user)” is a bit strange, isn’t it? Are there multiple user profiles set up on the device?

How old is your SIM card? After 2 years a SIM card can give trouble.
There are reports of other users where their SIM card is working in another phone and not in the Fairphone.
Perhaps you can ask a new SIM card from your provider.

Nope. I was able to add a new APN as seen above, though. I do agree it is strange.

Sad to hear. It is a strange problem that certainly is making me more averse to getting a fairphone after this one (if the provider can’t fix it.)

Oh, thanks for the info! Yeah, my SIM is very old at this point. I’ll definitely get a new SIM if nothing else solves the issue.

I think it would be interesting to find out whether a new SIM card solves the problem.
