Camera Focus Broken, Images Blurry

Hi there

A few days ago, my camera stopped working properly: the camera does not (automatically) focus anymore, resulting in blurry images. The focus seems to be ‘stuck’ at ca. 10cm. Trying to focus onto objects by tapping on the screen has no focus effect (but brightness is changed).

I used several apps and the issue persists, it seems thus to be a hardware issue. The selfie-camera works as expected.

Any ideas what the problem could be and how to fix it? Thanks!

10cm is the “closest” focus possible. It indeed sounds like it’s broken. Maybe reseating the camera module helps?! It won’t void the waranty, just make sure not to break anything. Other than that, I would contact Fairphone-support with a waranty-claim.

When something breaks it can void the warranty…

Welcome to the community and forum.

I agree that this sounds like a hardware problem but it’s always good to have context.

Have you tested the manual focus? In the stock Camera app switch to Pro mode and then tap MF.

What happens in Photo mode when you change to Super Macro and other zoom presets?

I literally said that in the same sentence you quoted.

Seems my brain did some selective reading, rereading you said

Which is literally the same as my comment…

Not sure how this sentence implies to you that breaking the phone won’t void the warranty. It is a very clear statement. But whatever…

I think I said I missed the second part, so I think we can stop here.

Dear All, thanks for your input and suggestions.

@OldRoutard Manual focus does not work (no matter the selection, the images stays blurry), but when I tap Super Macro (and to a lesser extent the 0.6x button), the image becomes sharp. There is also an audible clicking or ticking sound when switching from SuperMacro to the other options.

When tapping the 1x and 2x buttons, there is no visible change.

Does this additional information change anything with regard to your analysis / recommendation?

Thank you all again!

Uses the wide-angle lens I think.

So it sounds like the main camera is damaged.

Dear All

Thanks again for your input and advice.

I just removed and reseated the camera module, unfortunately to no effect. It looks as if it is a warranty issue. Let’s hope that actually replacing the module will fix the issue.

Thanks again to all of you!

Dear All

I replaced the camera module today and this has solved the problem: the focus works again and the images are as crisp as they used to be.

Thank you all for your support and best wishes.

How did you proceed to get a new camera ?

Yes, I ordered a new camera module from fairphone and replaced the original one; this did solve the issue.
